It's hardly been in the papers or on the news here at all this year. I wonder why?

Good question. The Cardinals had their share of injuries this season, but they came together to beat San Diego and the New York Mets in the play-offs before defeating Detroit.

There was a discussion about that very thing, the other day on ESPN.

Congrats to the Cardinals, by the way, they played every game like they deserved to be champions, and capitalized on every mistake the Tigers made. There were many in Michigan who though the Tigers would win in 5 games or less, but I was not one of them. I did, think the Tigers would win in 6 games, but I'm not too proud to offer up my most sincere congratulations.

The reason that this Series was pushed "under the radar", is because A) this year's Series didn't offer a huge national story-line, like the Red Sox winning their first Series since 1918, like 2004, or like the White Sox winning their first series since 1906-in 2005.

B) While the Cardinals to a certain degree, have a national following, the Tigers most certainly do not, unlike the Cardinals, or Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs or Dodgers. This series was strictly Midwestern in it's following. This also contributed to the low ratings, and the lack of coverage.

C) Another issue was that neither team has a nationally recognized "superstar", though I'd argue that St. Louis' Albert Pujols IS a superstar, I'd bet he could walk down the street in Phoenix, Los Angeles, Boston, New York or Miami and not be recognized, as opposed to a Curt Schilliing, Randy Johnson, Alex Rodriguez or Derek Jeter.

D) The weather, which rained out game 4, and threatened to do so to game 5, not to mention the cold temperatures that plagued the games in Detroit. The weather forecast were as much a part of the storylines of each game of this series, as the action that took place on the field. When watching broadcasts of the games in Detroit, there was more than ONE reference to the weather being more condusive to Hockey games, than baseball. Who in Florida, Arizona, or California, wants to watch baseball games where the fans and players are so bundled up, they all look like the Michelin man? Baseball a SUMMER game? not this series.

E) Neither team is in a national media Market, like Boston, New York, Los Angeles or Chicago.This is the first series since 1997, that didn't feature a team from one of those cities.

If anyone has idea's other than these, please don't hesitate in posting!!

I think Nut has summed it up pretty well...the Series never gets as much attention when it plays between the coasts...the NY-based media outlets seemed to decide that the post-season was over when the Yankees & the Mets got knocked out...
When I saw people in the stands (& some in the dugouts) bundled up like it was a football game, I began thinking they should go back to the shorter regular season, if only to allow this longer playoff schedule to get done before the snow flies...

I agree with all the reasons previously stated and I'll add that I think Fox's coverage of the event could be part of the problem as well. Just as with all of their sports coverage, they seem to absolutely flood the viewer with the fact that the game is being brought to them on the Fox network and appear to be more concerned with their fancy sounds and graphics than with the actual action on the field.

The choice of Buck and McCarver as the announcers for the series can't help much either. I know Buck's dad was a legend but frankly I can't stand to hear him do a game (baseball or football) and McCarver is just plain annoying. Then again, I suppose the fact that I'm a Cubs fan could cloud my judgement a bit when it comes to those two.
