Well, it seems the US has banned any Vegemite from hitting their shores, fools dunno whats good for em i say!

Apparently it is now illegal under US food laws, due to it having folate in it, something that is only permitted in breads and cereals

They are now searching Aussie travellers to ensure it is not being brought into the country

We are brilliant, I tell you. So now they search passengers for Vegemite and bomb making supplies. My tax $$ at work.

It's just sitting there, waiting for The Day when it shall rise and bring to the benighted foreigners the health and taste benefits of Australian gastronomic culture, full of good things so long as you discount a touch of folate on it's march towards total domination of the breakfast spread universe.

While I think it is rather idiotic, I think most people in the US that have even heard of vegemite only did so because of an '80s song by Men At Work. :p

ridiculous.
there may not be too many people in the u.s. that eat it, or have even heard of it but i'll bet there's a few from down under that will have one less thing to remind them of home.

:eew: After my recovery :yikes: :faint: ………………………… a sample was submitted to a local lab:huh: for testing. They forwarded it to the Center for Disease Control, who sent some to the Center for Biological Weapons Research. :starwars: Last I heard, Homeland Security:jester: was putting together an inspection team to track it down, so don't worry. They'll never find it (http://www.lucinda.net/bill/vegemite/).

LMAO@PF's pic!

I've tried it...and it's not my bag (<---old hippie statement), so I won't miss it. It's more of an aquired taste than scotch to me!

But...ummmmm...what's the dealio with folate? Why does anyone care about the source of where we get it? It's good for you...ain't it? What? Does the government think we're gonna OD on it or something???? I'm about tired of the big wigs telling me what I can and can't OD on!

Oops! Wait! That ^^^ came out wrong. But...you get my gist...yes?

folate, in the supplement form (aka folic acid) is possible to od on (i think) but it's part of the b vitamin family and they are all water soluble. ya just pee out the excess usually. od-ing on folate consumed in foods is practically unheard of.

and it *is* good for you! possibly prevents cancer, and it's especially good for women who are preggers cause so much of it is needed during rapid cell division plus it's been shown to reduce neural tube defects like spina bifida.

this ban is especially stupid cause just a few years ago, the fda *required* that it be added to grain products and it's naturally present in a whole slew of foods: bananas, oranges, berries, beans, nuts, and broccoli just to name a few.

Oh Sweety! I just discovered grits (was a little gun shy...being from the north and all) and I'm diggin em with a pinch of salt and some butter! I don't like them sweet though. Some peeps round here eat them in the most peculiar ways...YUCK!

Anyway...if it ain't illegal to get em where you are...I'll be glad to send a pack (or 60) of instant or cookable...whichever you prefer! My treat...no strings attached!

PM me if this sounds like a yummy good idea! We have Quaker Instant variety packs around here. And...all the other varieties you can think of...I think. Keep in mind...I'm not southern and so I might not be privvy to what you are accustomed to. I'll give it a whirl though!

Stupid Aussies that sell our treasures to overseas interests!....Tell ya if they fuck with the recipe heads WILL roll!

Apparently no-one in the FDA can say why or whether Vegemite is restricted. I suspect it was a security alert that was misconstrued.

Someone found out that if you add six ounces of Vegemite to a kilo of Torpex or plastique, you get about the yield of a kilo of Torpex or plastique. This is obviously too dangerous to leave in the hands of irresponsible Aussies.

Would that be with or without rubber gloves?

So Kraft is at it again, they spread a false rumor for free advertisment, now people in the US will want to try it. I just hope that they wear rubber gloves. :)

..."There is no ban on Vegemite," US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) spokesman Mike Herndon said. ......
The FDA, charged with policing America's food supply, has not issued an "import alert" to border officials to halt the import of Vegemite. ...
