Look out Harry Potter, you neglected to patent your cloak of invisibility (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6064620.stm)!
I can see this being a big seller to the Peeping Tom community in a few years, after the “bugs” have been worked out... Wait! No, I guess I couldn’t, could I?
Yet another potential invasion of privacy. :frown:

You know jseal, my first thought upon reading this news the other day was "You can be sure that those in power will find a way to misuse it."

You probably think you're looking at a printed text message on your screen, but actually it's this gorgeous lady in a very compromising position. The printed message is just behind the picture. :D

I suspect that to hide a person even to the level of the movie "Predator", the power usage would be prohibitive.

Very true Oldfart but if you just paint them pink and purple and dress them in neon green and give them a cheap SEP(somebody Elses Problem) feild it can be done quite easy.

Oldfart.
Perhaps at the moment, but for how long? In the instance of computers, I recall that the size has come down quite a bit during the same period that the speed has gone up. While the current state of the art in metamaterials is modest indeed, we may be surprised how fast the technology transforms these crude first efforts into something gekkogecko worries about.

jseal,
There is a flaw in the story "The Invisible Man" as pointed out by Isaac Asimov. If the light is not reaching your eyes or passing through them uninterrupted, you cannot see and become effectively blind.

I was thinking if we gave everyone really dark glasses we could almost achieve the same thing; get more sleep; and ... save electricity. What do you think?
(You notice, that naked lady is still just in front of this text. ;) )

Oldfart,
While he is correct, I believe that is not pertinent to the applications at hand in this case.
Take, for example, the use of this technology to conceal aircraft from radar.
Any radar has a particular signature, the frequencies it transmits, and the signal strength at those frequencies. The metamaterial cloak will be effective if it conceals the aircraft from the radar, making the aircraft invisible to the tool used to detect it at distance. It need be invisible in the optical end of the spectrum only if the radar used visible light for target detection, currently impractical for multi-mile sensing.

I just wear my camo and get the same effect.

Then we'll just put the batteries inside the shed...where no one can see them! :D
