View Full Version : I'm Nuts!

It's 5:30am here and Mr. Lixy just came up from the cellar with an old basket of mine in his hand. "Honey, come here", he said. I was scared to find out what he was going to show me.

Ya see...this past weekend has been a whirlwind of wildlife for me. Saturday past I found the tiniest bunny in a flower bed close to my house. Thought it was gonna go in the street so I picked it up with gloved hands and deposited it further back in my yard...where baby bunnies belong. It didn't struggle much so I assumed it was sick and would probably die. It did! I found it next morning on the rocks of the same flower bed. Oh well, survival of the fittest I guess.

That discovery was early Sunday morning. Later that day, as we worked in the yard, I heard something hit something over by my truck. Turned around to see the antenna on my truck bobbing. Mr. Lixy asked me what happened and I assumed a bird hit it. He went to look and sure enough there was a Baltimore Oriole in the grass. What a beautiful bird! It was stunned but didn't seem badly hurt. It flew away about 20 minutes later. Whew!

I continued working in the yard and a flash caught my eye. ANOTHER baby bunny? Yep...coming straight at me and headed towards the street. SHIT! OK...I chased the sucker down. This one was fiestier...much fiestier! Took me nearly ten minutes to nab it. "Take a picture", I said to the mister. He took it as the baby screeched in my hands. Damn those things are loud when they aren't sick! I released it way back in the yard this time. Ut oh...something was wrong with the camera and the pic didn't take. Well, I had enough exercise by then and the bunny continued to roam free!

Oh geezzzzz...I'm babbling, and it's about 6am now, and you're probably wondering what was in the basket this morning, huh? Mr. Lixy captured a baby mouse about the size of a half dollar (1"x1" approx.). It was soooooooooooooooo friggin cute and I asked what he was going to do with it. "Put it outside" he said. WHAT??????? "Oh honey, he's so tiny he'll just die or get eaten. I wish you hadn't showed him to me. I won't be able to think of anything else all day now. OK...go...go do what you have to...but don't tell me what you do!" Damn...he knows how sensitive I am about that sort of thing! Out he goes...and comes back in not 1 minute later with the basket in hand and a smile on his face. "He's still in the basket, isn't he?"

Now ya know...if there is one baby mouse, there are many baby mice. But Mr. Lixy loves me and he put it back down in the cellar with a commanding promise that he's buying mouse traps on his way home from work!

Now who's nuts?

Cute! This has been the year for snakes here. I can't even check the mail without finding one piled on top of my jasmine covered mailbox.

Lixy, what a fantastic story. Loved it. I can understand how you feel about little animals. Our cat stud was just a roaming baby kitten when our son brought it home from where he works, because he was afraid that it might get run over in the parking lot. Now, we deeply love that cat (my son named him "Stud") and he's a true sweetie.

Probably wouldn't keep a baby mouse though ... at least not without a cage. A basket in the basement may go a bit further than I'd likely go. Never-the-less, I love a tender heart that cares that much. ((( HUGS ))) to ya' Lixy.

Oh, yeah, say hi to "Mini Mouse." :)

You are right there! There is no such thing as a mouse. There are 'mice', but no single 'mouse'. ;) lol

Whew! I am not the only one. There are mice out in the garage and I get glue traps for them and so far, I have been able to "catch and release" all the ones I have caught. I catch and release spiders too.
My parents' Yorkshire Terrier is a saved dog. Friends of my parents' raise terriers and ours was born with a birth defect, a bad knee and hip. They legally can not sell dogs like that, and so they are given away, and the worst case scenerio, put to sleep. Mom brought him home one day, and the darn thing has been family since. i swear that his tongue is longer than his body.

TT...Wusses (sp check?) RULE!

Lilith...Soooooo very jealous of your jasmine covered mailbox! Ahhhhhh...I remember the Fla. flowers! And the snakes? Poisonous? If not...they ain't no thang to me! How do you know?

db...I KNEW you'd appreciate this story! Check pics to follow! *hugs*

osuche...Oh hun...I've always had a section of my heart reserved for the vulnerable creatures! TY for the hugs...backatcha *hugs*

PF...And your point? Should I not care for the masses if I care for one? Oh babe...you're gonna have to bite me!

lizzybits (*giggle*...my new name for you)...Ever hear of "garage cats"? Oh hun...just kidding. Round here most peeps have "barn cats", specifically kept to keep the mouse population down. Mr. Lixy wants to wait for a year or two to get another pet since my cat of 17 years died (never had this fuckin mouse thing when he was here!). Ahem!..."barn cats" aren't pets! Or so he's said. He don't trust me. Hmmmmmm...wonder why?

Bardog!!!!!!!!!!!!!....Oh Bardog!!!!!!!!!!!...JHCOAB! Missed you hun! TY for remembering me! Where ya been? Miss me too? Um...we'll take this up later *wink, wink...nudge, nudge*

Alassė...Geezzzzzzzzzzzzz I love your accent! ^5 about the big meese's! It's the teeny ones my heart bleeds for. Gotta spread a little Momma Lixychick (my mom was a kook) theory."If you want to live in thrive, let a spider go alive". Another thing she told me? "You kids drive me sooooooooo crazy that when I am reincarnated I am coming back as a housefly...so I can drive you as crazy as you made me all my life"! I got a tat on my upper chest so's I could KILL the disgusting "damn dunny budgies"

K...So, I got home after work tonight and went to check on "Minnie" (TY db) right off! He was out of his basket and I immediately assumed Mr. Lixy disposed of him after I left this morning. NOOOOOOOOOOOOO...he was across the room, squat on the cellar floor, and the moment I touched him he squeaked!

Got pics of that Baltimore Oriole and "my new baby". Sorry I missed the bunny baby. Camera said it's an "unrecognizable format"????????????????? Hey! You're the cam! What didn't you recognize?

ENJOY!

Yeah, the baby mouse is cute...just be careful of diseases and such.

We have two barn swallows that have moved into our barn and have built a mud nest on one of the rafters...could be the same pair we had last year cause they built their nest in exactly the same spot. In a few weeks we'll have baby birds chirping away.

Baby deer being born here now...very cute. Sometimes they'll hide under the current bushes while mom goes and eats.

<----- *thinks Lixy may be the kind to have some bird seed around (incase she wants to grow a bird ;) ) that may resemble Minnie type food. She may even want to soak some in water over night for a mini-Minnie. *

I know we are suppose to drink that non-fat, non-dairy, non-milk, white water with everything skimmed out and off of it, but nothing else can live on that. You better get some real milk. ;)

Lixy, loved the pictures. Baltimore Orioles are beautiful birds. Miss not seeing them around here. We've got the red-winged blackbird that really is pretty and some lovely finches, cardinals and blue jays ... but I've got a warm spot for Orioles. :)

Did you tell mini-mouse I said, "Hi?" Very cute.

Oh, yeah, the mouse is cute, too! ;)

Lil...Dunno if it was a he or she but damn sweet no matter what!

Alassė...I got two more pics of the Oriole but as I said it flew away after about 20 minutes recoup time. Someone told me that they like oranges (dunno if it's true) so I got a bag of navel's and halved them and placed them around my trellis. The ants are having a field day with them but I haven't seen an Oriole since this one flew away...lol!

jenna...Awwwwwwww! TY hun! Seems I'm a magnet for the happenings I described. Hubby just rolls his eyes and copes now...lol!

TT...I tried not to get too attached as I knew it couldn't last too long without it's momma. Mr. Lixy found it dead this morning. I stayed up late and "fed" it and held it and tried to love it and help it not feel so alone in this great big world. It's really all I could do! Poor thing just never had a chance.

rabbit...I thought about the desease thing and I hope he didn't carry anything. Mr. Lixy's resistance is down from his medication. I agree that the swallows are the same couple as last year. We had a pair for a few years. I miss them making a nest under our carport which is attached to our barn. They kept the carpenter bees at bay and followed behind us while we mowed the lawn with the tractor.

PF...Yep! I have the skim milk and I don't think Minnie liked it very much. Oh well...I tried! Thanks for the advice though...*hugs*

db...The Oriole's don't hang around too much. They are migrating and we are just a short lay over. We have robins, red-winged blackbirds, gold finches, bluebirds, grackles, blue jays, cardinals, ladder backs (woodpecker), yellow bellied sap suckers (woodpecker), flickers (woodpecker), sparrows, junkos...etc. Haven't seen my turkey in two years now but occasionally a wild bunch will come through the yard. Plenty of rabbits and chipmunks though. Never saw a baby chipmunk. Bet they are sweeter than hell! Minnie said to say hi before his/her early demise. Shame she couldn't have hung around longer but I knew her fate when I first saw her.

AND LIFE GOES ON!

P.S. Lilith? The snakes you spoke of? Any of them poisonous and if so, what kind? Just curious!

I've never seen an oriole before. They are stunning birds.

Late in the thread as usual.

Alasse, spiders have only two states of existance, dead and soon-to-be-dead.

Cherish your local wildlife while you can.
