A new (March 1) survey reports that only 28% of Americans were able to name more than one of the five freedoms granted to them by the First Amendment. However, 52% can name at least two members of “The Simpsons” family. While more than 20% of the participants were able to name all of the Simpsons family members, less than 1% of those surveyed were able to name all five freedoms found in the First Amendment.

More than 40% surveyed could name two of the three “American Idol” judges and 25% could name all three. Only 8 % could name at least three of their First Amendment freedoms.

That’s not all. About 20% of those surveyed agreed that the First Amendment granted them the right to own and raise pets, about the same percentage as those who believe that the right to drive is guaranteed by the First Amendment.

Sadly, even I must admit to not being able to being able to name all five freedomw "guarranteed" by the First amendment.

I had forgotten the freedom to petition the government for redress of grievances.

And no, I really couldn't name all of the Simpson, either. Don't pay much attention to the show.

sadly, it seems increasingly irrelevant whether or not people name these freedoms, as they are increasingly prevented from exercising them.

What about your freedom to call your ACLU lawyer when you hear a prayer on school grounds. just kidding. We have no freedoms left anymore because are judical branch of our government has taken them away. Them and all the ingrates that have immagrated to our country, who believe we have to change for them, and them not to change to our way of life.

Sorry, I am on a soap box, but America is the greatest nation on the planet, just give us back our 5 basic freedoms.

Try not to be too hard on the Judiciary. In this democracy, their primary role is to interpret the law, not to make it.

The soapbox we have here has been protected from the Communications Decency Act as implemented by President Clinton’s then Attorney General, Janet Reno. It was the ACLU that argued the case (Reno v. ACLU, 1997 (http://www.law.cornell.edu/supct/html/historics/USSC_CR_0521_0844_ZS.html)) which led the Supreme Court to rule that the CDA's "indecent transmission" and "patently offensive display" provisions abridge "the freedom of speech" protected by the First Amendment.

It was also the ACLU which argued the case against COPA (Ashcroft v. ACLU, 2004 (http://www.law.cornell.edu/supct/html/03-218.ZS.html)), also leading to a Supreme Court ruling against the legislation.

I think that the legislature and the executive branches bear the burden of the restriction on our freedoms, and THAT we can do something about.
