“Black Friday”
Glossary
Definition: The day after Thanksgiving in the United States, is frequently referred to as Black Friday.
General Use: One of the major U.S. holiday shopping days. The day many U.S. consumers begin Christmas shopping. The day is heavily promoted by retailers.
Origin: The origin of Black Friday comes from the shift to profitability during the holiday season. Black Friday was when retailers went from being unprofitable, or "in the red," to being profitable, or "in the black", at a time when accounting records were kept by hand and red indicated loss and black profit.

OF--In the U.S. at least, it's the one day a year that people will stand out in sometimes sub-arctic temperatures, in line for hours, in front of discount stores who open at 4:00 a.m. and which only have enough of the advertised products to satisfy the first 1.264 customers--in order that the rest of the 2350829820598325 people in line can growl, snarl, and run over each other with carts as the "official" start of the Christmas season begins. :)

Lilith,
My daughter enjoys shopping on Black Friday.

Does she get up at the butt crack of dawn or earlier just to stand in line?

Lilith,
Yes'm. Last year, she took the car, picked up a couple of her buddies (buddettes? No, wait, that's a different thread :) ) and was out of the house before 06:00. Bizarre!

I have met Summer at 5:00 at stores here. Last year I got a super duper cheap puter at Best Buy and lots of other great deals. It puts me in the Xmas spirit. It's usually freezing and I like the hustle and bustle.

Did it once and have vowed to never do it again. I can't deal with the large crowds of people diving for the deals... and more often than not, the deals aren't things I had on my list to buy.

I have done that a couple of times and it's great fun. Most years I got to work the day after Thanksgiving so I have to miss out on the pushing and shoving and those free gifts they give out at the door. :(

managing a store at the mall during the season put a HUGE kink in my love of the human race, vultures that they are. :p:D

My daughter works retail and has to be at work by 4:45am that day!! Let me assure you... She is NOT happy about this! LOL
Recently seen on a bumper sticker: "I know there’s a hell, I work in retail."

Or child care. I have a kid that comes now at 5am and doesn't leave until 6pm and no this sucker isn't getting anymore money for it. *rolls eyes*

lol, teddy...it's true!!!
except for the profits, the whole season is terrible. hours are insane. i worked so much one year i actually passed out right in the middle of the store from exhaustion and illness (god forbid you called off for a single day during the month between black friday and x-mas eve) stock flies off the shelves and can't get replaced fast enough. the store was a disaster and the gm doesn't care why, just that your tee's aren't folded perfectly and the jean stacks are missing sizes. shoppers are grumpy. temporary help is unreliable. and it culminates in an all-night mark-down of merchandise on christmas eve.
:o
sorry, done now.
You couldn't pay me enough to venture out on such a day of shopping......
I worked retail years ago and that was enough for me. :)

I am glad that I have sworn off shopping....and Christmas...
I gave it up for Lent...and realized I liked it. :D
Several years ago I worked in a mall food court. It was my experience that a lot of hype was given to Black Friday and while it was REALLY fucking busy, there were busier days between then and Christmas.
Myself? I work a lot better under pressure, so I wait until the 23rd to start shopping. :p
(I'd wait 'til the 24th, but a lot of stores close early that day.)

I'd believe that black friday isn't the busiest day for the average mall. Most mall based stores don't have deal buster early sales on black friday. It tends to be the department, discount, and electronics stores.

Hmmmph.
I can't believe you would insinuate that I, Aqua, would ever work in an "average" mall. [/snooty]

I tried it last year for the first time in my adult/on my own life (cause I wasn't hung-over...hmmmmmm!) and I found I liked it. I liked not being hung-over (bonus) and I found I liked doing the bulk of my shopping with maniacs. Who knew????? Who'da thunk Mom didn't ruin maniacal shopping for me! She was a basement bargain bra shopper for all of my growing life! Oh...that's a whole other story! Sorry...lol!
YAY Black Friday!

I hate shopping. I don't like all of the people and finding that one bargain just isn't worth it to me to have to deal with all of the crowds the day after Thanksgiving. That being said, I do like going the day/week after Christmas! Go figure! I like the markdowns and clearance items - not as much hustle/bustle either.. :D

I love to shop the day after Christmas too! Except now I've found that I have enough wrapping paper to last the next 10 years. That reminds me, time to pull out the Christmas cards and start writing them...

I didn't get any great deals this year. Spent a ton but there wasn't really anything my lovies wanted/needed on sale. Mr. Lil is zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz right now. He hit a store that opened at midnight and was there til 4:00 am, then went shopping with me. He went to get me a graduation present I was wanting so bad. He's wayyyyyy good to me.
People seemed really friendly this year. The longest line was Toys R Us. Literally an hour line just to pay.

People seemed really friendly this year.
Hereabouts it hasn't seemed so friendly, I've heard of two incidents people being robbed in their driveways after buying the new Xbox, & today at a WalMart near Ft. Campbell a lady was taken to the hospital after being trampled when the manager was a little slow about putting some sale items out on the floor...
