The French iconic cigarettes, Gauloises and Gitanes, will no longer be made in France! Production of those pungent babies is moving to Alicante, Spain.

It seems as if the days of the full-strength cigarettes loved by artists like Charles Aznavour and philosophers such as Albert Camus are numbered. I remember that the French expats in Africa always smoked Gauloises.

Dang! I say “I remember . . .” way too often these days. :(

lakritze,

Political attacks to the side, the really ferocious ones - the heavy-duty "dark" cigarettes are the ones being moved to Spain. Production of the lighter "blonde" versions of Gauloises and Gitanes will remain in France.

The filter tip didn’t show up until the 50’s.

I smoked Gauloises as a student when I could afford them.

They have a really strange filter which is a roll of paper pieces.

My mother worried that I was smoking funny cigarettes.
