Chief Justice Rehnquist passed away at his VA home this evening succumbing to thyroid cancer.
He's been on the court since 1972, after being nominated by former President Richard Nixon. He was elevated to the Chief Justice position in 1986 by President Reagan.
Godspeed to the 16th Chief Justice.

RIP Justice Rehnquist. While I didn't always agree with his positions, he was sound jurist.

Where are all of the Justices Thurgood Marshalls and John Blackmans when we need them. The real tragedy is this will afford another Bush appointment to the Surpreme Court.

What is the “unreal” tragedy?

This is just the way he wanted to go out. From all accounts he had a dry sense of humor and I am sure he is looking down now with a laughing countenance. Bless his soul and blessings to his family.

Gentlefolk,
President Bush has nominated John Roberts to succeed Chief Justice Rehnquist.
So much for making an experienced person Chief Justice! :(
Then again....I guess I should be thankful that he didn't nominate Clarence Thomas :rolleyes2
