King Fahd of Saudi Arabia has died in Riyadh. He was 82 years old.
After a youth of bacchanalian excesses, he returned to SA, where he served as Education Minister and Interior Minister before becoming Crown Prince in 1975.
He succeeded his brother Khalid as king in 1982, but has been little more than a titular leader since suffering a series of strokes in 1995. King Fahd and Prince Abdullah have steered SA through complicated times since the start of nineties. The social changes he began have gained a momentum which will probably roll onwards.
Many expatriates, I among them, found a livelihood in his country, although we never became part of his society. May Allah rest his soul in heaven.
