View Full Version : ALTs

Been spending a lot of time perusing other boards and seeing what is happening in the world of internet forums. One thing I have discovered is that ALTs, people who use alternative nicks to agree with themselves/argue/shit stir/cause trouble, are something that errodes the trust and general pleasant atmosphere of a board.
I've seen members use alternative nicks in a positive light too, like using one just for a character in a role playing story.
Over all I think it just indicates a person with no balls. Any thoughts?

I have other nicks....I drop them in every now and then for fun...i certainly do not use them for malicious purposes nor to argue or back myself up in a debate *LOL* What a complete waste...if ya cant stand by what ya saying with just one nick, then what ya saying is crap and ya need to take a long hard look at yourself!!

I used a ALT ages ago on AOHell. I dropped it when a gal in ohio attempted suicide because I wouldnt return her feelings for me.
(my alt was female. One of my closet skeletons)

i am lizzardbits or Lizz all over. it is my screen name just about everywhere. I did it just because it was easier to remember, it is just those tricky passwords i have to remember, lol
plus, my nick is a real life nick, based on my middle name Lizbet (My parents were hippies, lmao) so who i am on-line is pretty close to me in real life. in fact, my real name and being called Lizz are interchangeable, i answer to both. The only part about me that is a bit different I.R.L. is that i am rather shy about my body, and with pics here, I am the one that chooses the best angles and such. Other wise as Pop-eye the Sailorman would say "I yam what I yam."
plus i would think that having an ALT would be too hard to maintain. I am not much for lying because you have to keep lying to keep up the first lie.
I have used an ALT on another board mainly just for the fun of it and because I was being trolled and didn't like it. Mostly though if I want a change, I get a new ID's and stick to being one person at a time on a forum.
I think that is what a lot of the people on the financial message boards do - create several IDs to post on the same stocks. Except I think they do it to troll or hype a stock.

Right. I surely can understand wanting a change or role playing for creative reasons but I just don't get these peeps I see who use several nicks to post to eachother just to keep arguments or bad feelings alive. If someone ignores their rude, condescending, unpolite, behavior the first time they often try to stir the shit by posting under another nick. And I love it when they do it to back up their own views in a debate.
Fucking pansy asses. It's not something I'd expect from an adult. Not one with any strength in character.
I signed up with BIBI and then decided I wanted a new name, so I created a new account, but I don't post with it.
I have had thought that a certain member posts under two nics but I guess it will remain one of life's little mysteries lol ;)

I started with a dif nick as well and since it was never given Mod status I use it to check changes I make to the boards. Some poeple have seen me post gobbledy stuff under it checking out changes I've made.
But I certainly wouldn't use it for the sole purpose of causing dischord. People like that repulse me. Selfish, attention whores, like to hear them selves talk.

I originally signed up to this place under a different name, the one I use all over the internet, but when I started posting pics I decided to use this name. At the time I owned a website aimed at children with games and stuff on it under the original name, I thought it would be best to seperate those things. I've had a couple of other names online over the years but never used them to trick people or cause shit........it's all too much trouble for me!

The best part is they think our stupidity is as big as their arrogance and we won’t figure it out.

I generally have the same nick everywhere i go. I think it is the same as when people have a whole bunch of eamil addresses. It is stupid, I have two one that is for family ot email me, so i know when and important message comes. The other one is for subscriptions like to pixies and my DnD site and for junk mail from game sites. Yknow?
My hubby is ridiculous he has something like 5 that i know of and frequently forgets the passwords. and most he only checks like once every six months. Pisses me off especially when i dont know which one he is regularly checking. If i want him to know somethign within two days, i have to eamil him at work!! Absolutely ridiculous!!!
I have a few different nicks... and I rarely use any other besides Aqua. The other ones I do have are for the SOLE purpose of amusement. I don't wanna give away more than that... 'twould spoil the fun. :p I think one of them has posts in but one thread... being specifically created for the thread in question. As far as people using an ALT to stir shit up and or back up a point they already made with another nick... I'll borrow a quote from John Winger... "I think it sucks."

The previous forum I frequented did not have moderators, and people were able to post under any name they chose to do so. Once the a**holes discovered our little haven , it didn't take long for the flames to consume the forum. Now they have mods and require people to register...but it's too late. I can see the benefits of having an unknown identity, but like in real life, anonymity can be troublesome if one chooses to make it so.

It's like anything in this world, I guess. It's a tool, you can use it or abuse it. Whether it's a good thing or a bad thing depends entirely on the intent of the person in question.
Gotta say, people who think that use an Alt to stir things up or sneak in the back door after stomping out the front never seem to be as clever as they'd like to believe.

OMG LMAO!!
Some good points already brought up here on why people occasionally resort to using alternate names. For me it boiled down to a stalking issue (on other boards, not here!) and I changed my name to get away from my "fans". :p
IMHO there are very acceptable and appropriate ways and reasons for using ALT names but never to bash or hurt others or cause trouble on a website. That's just not right.

I frequent an IRC channel and have tried to log on under other names when I want to lurk about and only speak to certain people but it doesn't take long in a small community to develop a known "voice" or manner of speaking and people can pick me out from first type.
