Pixies Civil Defense- DENNIS

With today’s events in London, hurricane Dennis (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/) has lost the spotlight as it went to a class 4 storm. Some of our Florida Pixies have more than one major point of activity to be paying attention to.

While the disgusting action of man-made tragedy is repulsive because they don’t HAVE to happen, the destruction our natural environment can reek is still present and as about as controllable, so we have to watch this too.

I hope this thread doesn’t become an important one in the next few days.

Oh man, am I scared this time. I'm probably more terrified because of sitting thru Hurricane Ivan last year, just waiting all night long for my roof to rip off. We have plans to leave this time. I can not stay here again. We have contacted two different people asking could we come that way. One is North Carolina, the other is close to Daytona, Florida.
This morning the news said its a category 4, what strenghth it looses by being in Cuba it will gain when it reaches the warm gulf.

My wife & I recently bought a furnished home in W.Melbourne Fla,to winter
in.It is a very helpless feeling,knowing that you have to trust,your grounds-
keeper & maintenence man to close your awnings & watch over your
property.We vactioned there,a few weeks ago,& there is still alot of beachfront property,covered with blue tarps,because much of the damage,

I went out today to wrap up some things at my office....I could not believe the traffic. I am glad people are taking precaution but it was horrible. All the gas stations were packed with cars lined out at the highway. It's gonna be a long ride north.

Mr. IWM just called....what normally takes him about 35 minutes to get home took him over an hour due to traffic just stopped.

signs that said "Evacuation Route".That's something that you never see,in

We're praying for all of you that could potentially be in the way of Dennis. Please, play it safe and let us know you're okay when the storm finally passes. Hopefully, it'll weaken some over Cuba and the that deeper waters are cool enough that it won't regain the strength it loses.

Last report I heard was 1 fatality due to contact with a downed power line, otherwise Gulf coast residents are mostly dealing with the usual inconveniences of life in the tropics...all in all, I'd say a better outcome than we might have expected, with memories of Ivan the Terrible still fresh in the minds of so many...currently, Dennis is pissing away the last of his energy outside my window, bringing us some sorely needed rain...I expect a complete report from our gulf Pixies when they get their tin cans & squirrel cage generators going again...

I'm about 200 miles north of the coast and the wind gusts got up to 50mph here so this wasn't a little storm by any means. Most of the Mississippi coast was told they could go back yesterday evening. Hope all you Pensacola area folks are alright.

Well, Dennis made landfall about 35 miles west of me yesterday afternoon around 2pm. All is well here now, we just got power back at noon today (Monday). Glad to hear that IWM is OK also. Hope any other pixies in the area are OK as well. I know we had one in Pensacola, but I don't remember his name??? Thanks to everyone who was thinking about us and wishing us well.

Back home now...just a bunch of limbs in the yard thankfully! Were told we went without power for about 9 hours or so. It was, however, pretty nerve wracking to watch it hitting your home on tv, not knowing what damage it was causing. :hair:

Just back from a week long trip visiting family in Miami. Dennis left his calling card there as we caught tropical storm force winds and rain Friday night. Brought back some really bad memories for us of riding out Andrew in 1992. :(
