I'm contemplating relocating. I'd love a list of the things you like best about where you live and the things you like the least about it!

Let's see... Western New York

Best:
1) Four seasons - I love the change of weather, and don't let people mislead you, winter is wonderful.
2) The people - everyone is much friendlier than I've encountered anywhere else, and also much more helpful.
3) Cheap cheap cheap - one good thing about living in a slightly economically depressed area is that everything is cheap. Houses, food, you name it.
4) The restaurants - the food in western NY is fantastic. FANtastic. And there is such a huge variety. LOL - there's a reason most WNYers are overweight.
5) The culture - between the science museums, art galleries, theaters, zoos, history... I could go on and on.
6) The parks - we have such fantastic parklands (even though most of Erie county is closing theirs, lol, come to Niagara county)
7) Canada - such easy access to another country with a wealth of things to do and explore
8) We never have traffic jams
9) Sports - there's so many professional/semi-professional sports teams in the Buffalo area: Bills, Sabres, Bisons (AAA Baseball for the Indians), pro LAX, a wealth of college teams to follow

The least:
1) The taxes in some areas are really high, you need to do your research
2) Niagara Mohawk fucks us on power costs
3) It sucks you in! LOL - once you get in, it's hard to leave. :)

I'm not sure I could convince you to move to Texas, you've lived here, and well, it's not nice enough to make me stay either.

Peoria area is pretty. Situated on the Illinois river, there are beautiful river bluffs giving the nearby country a pretty, rolling look. The river is very nice and we're blessed with both a stern-wheeled cruise boat that reminds you of the old river boats; and, a new "gambling" boat ... the PAR-A-DICE. Great parks, fairly low cost of living. Many of the features of a larger city (planitarium, zoo, wildlife sanctuary, excellent museum, etc.) while permitting a person to reach any part of the city in 15-30 minutes tops. Good interstate and air connections and some lovely small cities surrounding Peoria (which is where I actually live. A little town of around 15K). Four seasons as some of you have seen in my park pictures :).

Plus, I guess, just a couple of hours from Chicago; 3 1/2 from Indianapolis; 3 from St. Louis; and, about 3 from Des Moines. Maybe 7 hours to the Mall of the Americas near the twin cities in Minnesota; and within easy striking distance of Milwaulkee and Memphis.

Worst thing ... hmmmmmm ... maybe the distances involved in reaching the western mountains or the eastern coasts; the northern woodlands or the southern Gulf. Come to think of it, that makes us centrally located ... so maybe that's not so bad. :)

You know where I am.......just smaller than you're town and about 30 minutes to the white beaches. THe military base keeps our town growing more by the second and houses going up like mad. We have pine trees instead of palm trees and at times still have that small town feel where everyone seems to know everyone.

BUT....also small-town friendliness and neighbors, summer festivals, small schools and classes, and close friends. :)

OMG Fussy! LMFAO!

OK...N.E. USA? Not much in the natural disaster department. We have a few tornados and some blizzards and tale ends of hurricanes...and every once in a while we make a slight mark on the Richter scale...but nothing to write home about (thus far). The four seasons are just what you read about...glorious and shitty all in the same season! The people are nice...a bit dull at times, but really nice! Close by is the heart of Liberty...Philadelphia! All the best bands love to make a stop over when on tour. The culture is there if you like that sort of thing...lol! Someone once told me that our trees look like giant broccoli. He was from the California coast and I guess they don't have "broccoli" type trees out thata way...hmmmmmm. I think he meant it as a good thing. I think. Back to basic kinda people. Well, actually...I don't think they've ever advanced so you could say basic people, not back to basic. They have fun naming their towns round here too. Intercourse, Pa. is one of the more famous  ones. And, ya know what? Even if Fussy thinks it tastes shitty...we have Hershey, Pa. in all it's sweetness! But whatever you do...don't move to Allentown (the place Billy Joel sings about)! It's not all it's cracked up to be...trust me! Skiing in the Poconos...swimming down the Jersey shore. Close to N.Y., N.J. (not that that is a selling point...just a fact), Delaware, Virginia, Maryland, Maine...in any given direction. Oh...and we are really close to this really cool "Clothing Optional" nudist camp...Sunny Rest. Matter of fact...we'll be visiting it this coming week. I'll report back on that after the fact. Schools are pretty cool...Penn State, etc. Crime is low round my part. It happens...but few and far between compared to less rural areas.

Flip side? Can't buy a pair of underwear within 15-20 miles of my house!!! Ya gotta drive to the point of boredom to get a decent vibrator! Did I mention we are VERY rural? And damned if the trees don't look like giant broccoli (for those who hate broccoli)!

Denver or Front Range

Move here:

1 Get to see the mountains every day
2 No humidity
3 Play in the snow/mountains but you don't have to live in it. Even when it snows in the winter it melts away within days.
4 Central location so travel to the coasts doesn't include jet lag
5 Big city-Denver or plenty of smaller cities close by

Maybe not:

1 Air quality can be bad sometimes
2 Blue counties in the FR the rest of the state is Red counties
3 Traffic in metro isn't that bad, not unlike any other large metro

Another Western NYer here...

+++++
1) Quality of life is high (low property values, good schools, low crime)
2) Spring, Summer, and Fall are GLORIOUS here
3) Getting to Toronto for the bennies of a major city is easy
4) More golf courses per capita here than anywhere else in the U.S.
5) Live in the country, work in the city in 20 mins.
6) Weekly festivals during the late Spirng, Summer, and early Fall.

-----
1) Winter SUCKS...especially for me as I am a native Floridian.
2) Taxes are high...we have a state income tax and everything here that can be taxed is.
3) If you are, politically, a moderate conservative, as I am, the extreme liberalism here can grate on the nerves.

Pros of my 'hood (a rough area of T.O.):

1. low rents, great deals on food, clothes, etc.
2. high multiculturalism -- lots of awesome foods from many countries, a Tibetan restaurant just opened up down the street over the weekend
3. close to grocery stores, library, restaurants, drugstores, convenience stores, etc.
4. close to Lake Ontario
5. streetcar and bus routes

Cons:

1. no subway line
2. high crime - drugs/violence/prostitutes
3. no movie theatre within walking distance
4. it's becoming gentrified which means the artists may have to move elsewhere as rents may increase
