Friends and I were talking about this, but I thought I'd bring it out on the net. What is it you ladies notice about a man's place (apt, condo etc.) the 1st time your over?

how dirty/clean it is? how soft his bed is? whether he has good taste in music collections? etc.

I definately agree... cleanliness is the #1 thing, and I like it if he has actually decorated the place (stuff on the walls and the whole 9). I also try to sneak a peak in the fridge, it's a good sign if there's more in there than beer and hot dogs

I agree- and if it smells good or bad is a big thing for me. Especially the bathroom.

The cleanliness. If his house is a horrible mess, it's probably a pretty good reflection of him as a person as well...eek!

I wouldn't dare make a decision about anyone on how clean their place was!!!! ..... people who live in "dirty" glass houses, you know!! :)

I think the first thing I notice is if he seems to feel comfortable in his own space .... the only way clean, smell, etc would factor in for me would be if it was bad enough to draw attention to itself. I'm always interested in how other people decorate their places though ... sparse or cluttered .. the things we pick to share our space with tell much about who we are.

I'd still check for the exits first...

I like to see very little sports memorabilia or cheesey things like that. I had to live with a kitschy guy and vowed never to do it again.

As for me....cleanliness, followed by a perusal of his book collection (there I am looking for depth and breadth of interestes). No book collection....absolutely NO second date. Seriously.

(shallow, huh?)

The first thing I'd notice is how clean it was, can't be helped. A clean house isn't a deal-breaker...and I'm not talking white-glove stuff. I don't mind if he hasn't mopped the kitchen in the last couple of weeks. But month old pizza boxes, or stuff left anywhere it fell would be a bit of a turn off...I wouldn't be able to help thinking that I might be signing up as maid as well as lover.

The first thing I'd look for (as opposed to just noticing) is whether the place was at all homey. It doesn't have to be anything like my style, but I'm curiious to know if any kind of thought had gone into the feel of the place...or if it was frat-boy chic. I'd be much more impressed with someone who'd put thought into making a space comfortable...and it'd probably work with me, I'd be more comfortable there.

What would you like to see on the bookshelf? Any authors or topics that would rate more stars? Do you look at the music collection too? Does that carry any weight?

My books are still in storage since I just moved into a new apartment. Getting books on the shelf does make it feel more like home to me.

It's fun reading this... as my house was recently on show for all the world (for sale) it was interesting to hear people's comments on my home... they fell in this order recently from a few friends that stopped by:

1) It's sooooo clean - very evident of no children or husbands, I'm afraid to touch the walls for fear of leaving fingerprints.

2) HOLY CD collection... you have sooo many. And wow! what a variety of music.

3) WOW! Look at all those books, have you really read all of these?!

But even through the showings it was repeated comments from potential buyers as to the cleanness, organized state, and homey feel.

Ditto!^^^^^^^^ Guys clean your toilets...... Thats a big turnoff if they are nasty.
Trash on the floor..... Can't see the sink for the dishes. Hard to see the good points of the man when he doesn't have basic cleaning skills. :(
If he get's all that cleaned up, I'll look and see what he puts on the walls, what kind of stereo system he has. Does the guy have any tools? (sorry farmgirl coming out here.)
I like a guy who is creative and can make things with his hands. :)

Decor for me. Messy frat boy's house isn't as tolerable as say messy metrosexuals house.

I notice cleanliness first... my major thing is if the dishes are clean or not. I hate stacks of dirty dishes. Then I look for books. :)

Books? Well, of course....he should be like me.

Actually, I don't care *what* he reads -- as long as there is more than one genre.

An example -- looking at my shelf.....left to right....

Jack Welch "Winning"
Emily Dickenson's Poems
"Ivanhoe"
"The Silicon Eye" -- business book
"Statistics"
A couple Robert Ludlum Books
etc.....

Someone who has diverse interests is easier to talk to after sex. ;)

I would like to see a few classics on the shelf. I don't need to see Emily Bronte, Emily Dickinson, James Joyce, etc. but a couple of them would be nice.

The toilet bowl must be clean.

He must have a place. :D My last guy surfed between place to place so maybe I'm not all that picky but a place is now paramount, people! :box: :whack:

I honestly notice the smell first and foremost. That impact when the door is thrust open and you take that first step in...that smell says a lot about a person cause they don't even notice it themselves anymore unless it's vile and gross! But everyone has their own particular scent in their household. It says a few things to me. It can be stale and musty and tells me he doesn't clean very often. Or it can be fresh and tells me he airs out the place once in a while cause he knows he doesn't always smell sweet...what with all the yucky bodily functions that fly when he is alone...if ya know what I mean *wink, wink*...and that he empties the trash periodically and doesn't let the science experiments grow.

Next, I notice if the path is narrow or wide. Clutter is a turn off...and I like a wide path so I can get to the exits (as BIBI suggested...^5!) if I need to and not have to navigate the pizza boxes and beer packs.

Next, I notice if there are many pics of girls around (not nudes...just pics). Then I ask..."Sisters?" If he hesitates or starts to remove them...I hit the exit without even a goodbye. If he's keeping pics of old relationships around...I'm not going to add to that collection!

Next is his music library or lack of it...hoping upon hope he isn't secretly into country tunes or that guy with the pan flute!

On to the bathroom! Now...if he had/has a cat or a dog, would I let them drink from his potty? If I wouldn't let them...why would I sit on it? Hey...it's a fair way to judge! I'll flip open the lid and seat (if they aren't already up) and check the cleanliness. This is one spot that can NEVER be too clean! And just before I leave the bathroom...ok, I'll admit it...I'll peek into the medicine cabinet just to make sure there aren't any anti-fungal meds or scripts for STD's! A girl's gotta look out for herself ya know!

If I'm still there after all that...he's passed the test and I can get comfortable!

I'll peek into the medicine cabinet

Have you ever gotten captured when you peak? I read a story once where some people had a house party. They did go through and "sanitize" the medicine cabinet of any personal meds. Then they somehow filled the cabinet with marbles. Imagine the embarassment of the person who opened the cabinet :) A Post-It note on the inside is another way to capture someone.
