I think that the borders should be more open.

I think that the Northern border is fine now. Living on the Canadian border, I have watched to border crossings get stricter lately, which is good, because anyone could cross before. But the customs process is grueling, and I think that it is good as it is.

Side note: I think the idea of requiring passports to go to Canada is ridiculous. :)

Even President Bush is saying these guys are more of a problem than they're worth. They are vigilantes trying to make a name for themselves.I am glad the ACLU and human rights watchers are keeping an eye on them.

They might be a problem but at least they are trying to do something. The government sure hasn't. I have been hearing about the border problem now forever. How hard can it really be to control if they decided to?

It seems that I recall that the states has instituted the need for Canadians to possess passports(by 2008) to gain entry to the states and Canada may reciprocrate the gesture....

We did that with the Kiwis, the Australian version of Canadians.

Now they have Passports we at least know who we're deporting.

BIBI, whats worse is that they want to make citizens of the USA to have a passport to re-enter the country.

Border control issues aside, I'm not sure about closing the borders. Look, most of the illegal immigrants are not doing jobs that most people want to do. But beyond that, they really want to be here. They want a better life. I have a hard time turning away a group of people who cobbled together a boat to get through choppy waters when so many Americans take everything that they have for granted. Can we just trade some of them?
I do find it amusing that Gov. Schwarzenegger is pushing hard for closed borders. Yes, California has quite a few problems financially due to illegal immigrants, but you would think an immigrant would be more sympathetic. Or at least less vocal.
