I once came across the Tantric defination for the man on top position.Their defination seemed a whole lot more enjoyable than the "missionary" or "vanilla sex" used here in the west.I am now unable to locate the place where I found it. Does anybody have information on this much under rated position? It seemed to me that it got it's bad rap from people using it exclusively, never experimenting with anything else. It reminds me of the scene in the old movie, Ryan's Daughter with Sara Miles and Robert Mitchum. On what was supposed to be their wedding night and both fully clothed,Mitchum rolled on top, after about 30 seconds gave a couple of grunts and rolled off and fell asleep. It is sex like this that gave the position a bad name.

the "holy mary mother of god, jesus christ i'm cummmmming, amen" position? :D
actually, it has lots of names, depending on where arms are, if the knees are bent, it the lovers' legs are entwined. etc.

Maybe I'm wrong but I think it's the only position 'allowable' by the church. I think we can all guess as to what church I'm speaking of.............

It's a damn good position! I love the face to face, bodies pressed together, talk dirty to me while you give it to me aspects of it. To hit the best passion in that position, I like my knees back, my feet anywhere from on his lower back to up in the air, calves over his arms. Dunno if that still falls in the category of missionary position, but whatever, it feels really good!

I think the basic premise of missionary is suposed to be boring and not too pleasureable. I love everything that was said^^^and use the basic position to build off of. So for clinical sake I'll call it 'missionary spiced up' :D

it's called missionary only because of the submissive roll that is taken by one of the participants.

In the 19th century missionaries visiting "heathen" countries decided that man should cease the animalistic postion of propagation. They decided man should be on top of the female to show superiority over her and not be associated with the animals in the wild.

Actually BIBI itwas in the about the 13th , 14th century as Catholic missionaries started moving out into the world as a whole. It was considered to be part of the "conversion " process to make sure that the whole idea of sex was looked upon as a matter of precreation only and that if the male assumed the dominate lead then the female would not be in the position to enjoy the act itself, thus making it a duty and not a pleasure...........

How ever it did not seem to make much of a difference in many parts of the world until folks became "civilized".

At least that is what I think I read......

although both answers make total sense, that is not the origination of the word. the words "missionary position" in regards to sex did not show up in the english-oxford dictionary unlit the late 1960's. the legends attatched to the word are just that, a legend, or a story. it is believed by word origin researchers that the name missionary-style was applied by popular culture in the late 50's early 60's because of it's "boring" and "clean" connotations. in other words, something that the stodgey church officials would allow between married couples. so it was a kind of a thumbing of the nose at the church in a time when popular culture was searching for ET, watching elvis gyrate those hips, and reading jack kerouac and his contemporaries. plus, researchers also believe that the tao and tantra sexual guides are at least 5 or 6 thousand years old and they have never applied the term missionary to any sexual position. in any case, there are many positons described in the kama sutra and other ancient sex guides with a partner on top, and any so-called heathen would have had no need to adopt a name from the missionaries.

I always thought "Missionary Position" should somehow incorporate the use of one's knees. But hey...what do I know? :D
