Subject: Diagnosing a stroke

This is no JOKE

Symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify.
Unfortunately, the lack of awareness can spell disaster. The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

*Ask the individual to smile.

*Ask him or her to raise both arms.

*Ask the person to speak a simple sentence.

If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher

After discovering that a group of non-medical volunteers could identify facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, researchers urged the general public to learn the three questions. They presented their conclusions at the American Stroke Association's annual meeting last February. Widespread use of this test could result in a prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke and prevent possible brain damage.

A cardiologist stated that if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people, you can bet at least one life will be saved. Tell as many people as possible about this. It could save their lives!

This has nothing to do with sex,but I thought that some might be interested!

Please commit those symptoms to memory people! My wife had a stress related stroke at age 42 (full recovery) and it scared the hell out of both of us! Even now when she feels her face going numb she goes to the Doc. and will be on baby asprin for the rest of her life. Even with a full recovery the chemical change in the body will effect both of you(emotionally & physically) And go take a course in CPR! you may need it

I recieved that, from my uncle,in Conn.He said that he had checked it out,on
the Truth or Fiction website,& it was true! Irish
P.S.I recently had a CAT scan & Angiogram & the doctor told me that I had
previously,had a mild stroke.This was news to me,so they can happen,without
even the person knowing.

I suffer from migraines.. :(

February 2002, at the age of 38, I had what was called a TIA (transeit(sp) ischmic attack) which is a small stroke that could have been caused by my migraine medication. The warning on the medicine was that in 2% of the population taking the medicine they could suffer from a stroke, heart attack, etc.

I appeared as if I were drunk... I thought Cobalt had a blue feather in his hair, my speech was slurred.. my left side was slightly paralyzed, I walked as if my left leg had fallen asleep (dragging/shuffling) and strenght tests were very different from one side of my body to the other. The left side of my face felt numb...one of the tests the docs in the emergency room had me do was stick my tongue out at them....if my tongue listed to one side that indicated some paralysis...it did, but it only lasted a day. I was VERY lucky.

I have special medicine for my migraines, and I have to be very careful and be monitored when I have one in case it happens again.

I've had boyfriends that were absolutely, completely incapable of doing #1 or #3. Thankfully, they were different men. :D

Thanks Irish. I just found out I was a walking time bomb with high blood pressure and a high platelet count. I'm on Bp medicine, diuretics and aspirin trying to head this off. :(

Another reason why I love this place... and always find myself coming back even when life pulls me away...

I have had strokes... 3 so far... my first was when I was 20 weeks pregnant with my first son... the second when I was 34 weeks pregnant (the nite he died in utero).. and again.. New Years Eve last year....

Each one (thankfully) mild.. with no lasting side effects... but absolutely the scariest.. and strangest experiences of my life... when asked to discribe them.. the best I can do is to compare them with what I imagine would be an out of body experience... very strange...

at the time of my 1st stroke I was only 23 years old... so it can happen to anyone... and the causes are not usually clear... so I urge each of you to remember the symtoms..

Hugs...
