View Full Version : My kitty cat

My kitty Simba got hit by a car yesterday sometime
He couldnt breath properly nor walk
The vet kept him overnight (weren't sure he'd make it through...but he did)....i got him home today....he still cant walk properly(and wont unless he absolutely has to)...he sorta staggers (he has a fractured pelvis apparently) and his breathing is still laboured (maybe a tear in his diaphram)
The vet let me take him home as he was stressing in the unfamiliar surroundings....He refuses to eat or drink still....but has peed (*L* means his bladder nerves weren't damaged at least..)
He is at present asleep with his Mum lying beside him licking his fur. He is in pain obviously...but thats what happens when ya take on a car
Every now and then he rattles up a purr....so i'm very hopeful that with some TLC he'll make it.
Anyway time will tell wether he recovers to what he was

Keep it stocked with mynahs and starlings and the other pest species and you're
doing the world 2 favours, and the cats one as well.

Me and Sulley and Leiber are all hoping for the best for your kitty. Sulley is even using his special kitty telepathy to channel good energy to him!

Having worked as a vet assistant and tech, I've unfortunately seen many of these situations...I really hope your kitty recovers quickly, I'm very very sorry to hear this happened :(

Update:
He's breathing a bit easier today....still refusing to eat or drink which has me quite worried as it been since Thursday and today is Saturday
I've tried to gently force him to at least drink but it upsets him, which in turn upsets his breathing..so i just let him be

He seems the same to me.....he just lays there...sorta on his belly with his back legs out beside him...must be the comfiest spot for him......i made him a nice soft bed but he prefers the floor....might be a bit more supportive of his pelvis i spose
Here's some pics of him in his happier days

How long can a cat go without water?
3 days is long enough. Let me tell you how you can tell if he is dehydrated or not.
Pull up on the skin between his shoulderblades and then let it go. If it takes more than 3 seconds to snap back he is dehydrated. If he is, your vet can give him subcutaneous fluids(IV fluids) to keep him rehydrated for a couple of days. You also need to check his gums periodically. They should be pink. If you press on his gums and let go.... see how long it takes for the color to come back. Again if it takes longer than 3 seconds he could still be in shock or he's losing blood somewhere inside.
Good luck girlfriend. Btw........ Is he breathing with his mouth open or closed?
Sharni
12-25-2004, 11:18 PM
His mouth is open....though nowhere near as far as it was...his tongue is no longer out as well....he looked like a dog does when it pants
cowgirltease
12-25-2004, 11:28 PM
Yeah sounds like he has a diaphragmatic hernia. What color is his tongue?
Sharni
12-25-2004, 11:35 PM
Pink as far as i know

((((Sharni and Simba)))) ~ sending healing thoughts
Sharni
12-26-2004, 01:07 AM
Thanx CGT....they were both very interesting
I just checked him and he appears to be breathing much better...not normal by any means but better
His meow is rather pitiful but he's trying.....he purrs a bit louder
The vet did say he thought he had a tear in his diapham...but that he thought it to be small enough to heal itself....so hopefully...going by how he's breathing that will happen
cowgirltease
12-26-2004, 01:26 AM
Yes lets hope it's a tiny hole and seals itself off. The main thing now is just don't stress him out. He will eat when he gets hungry.I'm sure he just hurts so bad right now he doesn't feel like it but he does need some fluids.
Hang in there. :) :thumb:
Sharni
12-26-2004, 01:47 AM
Yes him not eating doesnt worry me....i know how i feel when i feel like shit *LOL*
Water i know he needs....its been in the 30s every day so far...but if i try to get some into him it stresses him....so i'm just gonna have to watch and wait i think
Sharni

Simba doesnt look too good today :(
He refuses to eat and drink still......i managed to get about 1/2 a teaspoon in to him but he gagged on every drop
He's got pus coming out of his paws where he must have damaged some claws....his eyes are all yucky in the corners
His meow has all but dissappeared...i can feel every bone in his body....he has absolutely no energy
I rang the vet who said to bring him back in and he'll check him out....fingers crossed we can get him through this

Our deepest sympathy for Simba and for you, Sharni. You did everything you could to make his life better and toward the end did everything you could to make sure he knew he was loved and cared for. I know this is and will be a tough time for you. Please accept a family hug from Lieber, Sulley and me (((Sharni)))
when i lost my best kitty, the one that went through a divorce and everything else with me, i found that the only thing that helped me feel better was looking at pictures of when we were happy and together. please feel better soon, although i know it takes a little while.

I'm sorry, Sharni.
I grew up with dogs, and didn't have a cat until after I was married. I picked up a stray and loved that cat like I never thought I ever would. He was a great cat. He taught my wife's sissy cat how to hunt, and protected him from the bully cats in the neighborhood. I was devestated after he didn't come home one night (very unusual) and I found that he'd been struck by a car. Amazing how animals can touch us in such a deep way, even when we insulate ourselves against it.

I'm so sorry, Sharni!!! I know how hard this is and how totally helpless this makes a person feel. We lost Gidget in August, and had to put one of the kittens down just a few weeks later. It's so hard when they've become such a big part of our life and a member of the family.
I like to believe that our animal friends will be waiting for us at the Rainbow Bridge. Hopefully you too can find some comfort in this.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
