speaking of handy :D What hobbies do you have? Do you make things?

I make beaded jewelry and know some people like SS quilt. I was curious what else people here do and would love to see pics of your handiwork?

Here's some pics of the type of things I make... I like to make jewelry I think people could actually wear, not too fancy but not plain either. But it's the stones that I love best about it all.

Ooh Lilith, very pretty stuff.

I got into soap making when I was about 16--not the kits you buy in the store to melt the glycerin soap, but starting with oil and lye and ending up with soap. It's tedious but all my friends love it.

I dont have any pics, but the next time I make it I can take some.

It's not really my hobby...since I do it for a living as well...but I am pretty handy at reupholstering. I'm right in the middle of taking apart two tall-backed chairs I have in my dining room. They've been in the family for years (since Mr. Lixy was a little boy...maybe even before he was born), and though they were built very well (they don't make um like they used to), the original fabric is in a disgusting state of affairs. I have started taking off the old upholstery. I've made the patterns for the seats from the original seats. I have the textile I am going to use to recover them. And, I even took a few pics of the process thus far. I just haven't uploaded the pics to the puter yet because I want the whole process in one folder and it's easier and less time consuming to do it from one launch than to do it pic by pic. I'll show ya everything when I get the job done...but don't hold your breath cause I've been known to procrastinate this kinda stuff BECAUSE I do it all day at work. LOL!

Geezzzzzz Lil...I love your bead work! Absolutely beautiful pieces!

I make fleece blankets... they are the no sew (tied sides) version which are quite simple to make, but look quite nice when completed. I've not taken any pictures, but they are fun to make something that is taylored to someone else's tastes ... everyone gets one for Christmas this year.

i'm sorta generally crafty. a little of this, a little of that. making something useful or decorative from scraps of fabric or wood or whatever is handy, refinishing old furniture (love the final product don't really love the process), making wreaths from grapevines...etc... i've worked with potters clay and wheel (i'd love to have one here in the house and a kiln), stained glass, jewelry, batik. i love to draw with pencils, old fashioned quill and ink and oil pastels. and i like to paint, especially watercolors.

beautiful jewelry, lil. very nice craftsmanship. do you sell them?

I dabble in general digital image fuckery. :p My AV is one example... the Mountain Spoo can... WI's sheep AV... even did a few custom Lixy/Nikki (not nikki1979) pics. Those Lixy/Nikki pics were among my first attempts at photoshopping... they can be seen here: Lixy ~n~ Nikki 1 (http://216.150.92.84/forums/showthread.php?t=9405) Lixy ~n~ Nikki 2 (http://216.150.92.84/forums/showthread.php?t=9487) Lixy ~n~ Nikki 3 (http://216.150.92.84/forums/showthread.php?t=9653)

I'll attach the Spoo can and another pic I think turned out well.

<--- I bought FloralFantasy necklace with the Lotus pendant from Lilith back in June. I absolutely love it. I get tons of compliments on it.

I do lots of little things here and there. I play with clay, stain glass, mosaics, beading, etc. Lately I have been making windchimes out of old things (big into taking something old and broken and making something new and fun). I tend to give things away. I make something wear it or display it someone says they like it I give it to them. Next thing I will make I will take a pic to post it. It is the holidays and right now I am helping my kids make their gifts for family and friends. ;)

Oh Lixy I so wish I had the patience to do upholstering. That is practically the one thing I wish I could do.

He worked so hard on those threads with Nikki and I! I tried and tried to get him to "join us" in a finale thread...but Nikki fell in love with Legend and he swept her away and we never got around to the climax of it all! LOL! You do know how much we appreciated your assistance though...don't ya Aqua? It was so much fun to send the pics off to you and get them back as if Nikki and I were on the same continent...not to mention, in the same room! Ohhhhhhh, those were the days! Ahhhhhhhhh...*big sigh*

Great work with the "spoo" and that other sexyasallhell one! *wolf whistle*

P.S. I wanna lick and suck your av!!!

I LOVE your sentiment about giving things away Summer! I do something similar. When someone asks me to sew something for them and let them know the price, I can never charge them and I end up just leaving it on their doorstep when they aren't home and somehow never being available to collect when they insist on giving me something for my troubles. LOL! I've lost a lot of money that way...but I have the satisfaction of knowing I did something nice for someone who would have paid an arm and a leg for it elsewhere!

As to the upholstering...I have a distinct advantage because I work at it everyday. I have the materials (foam, welt, zipper, breathers, free textile...etc.) and tools whenever I need them. I'll end up doing most of the prep work at home...but when it comes to the final stapling and sewing, I'll just take it to work and finish the job there on the upholstery floor and on my sewing machine (I have the feet for the machine required for such heavy work). I can see how anyone would think it's fun...but trust me...it's labor intense! I think the worst part is stripping down/tearing off the old stuff to get at the basic parts to see what needs to be replaced. I'd be glad to help you though, Summer...should you ever want to dabble! PM me anytime!

hmmmmm where to begin?.... Mom was (now retired) a home ec teacher, so I tried a lot of things at a fairly young age ... learned to really enjoy doing many of them. I knit ... have done some really time consuming and detailed sweaters .... love the process of watching all the pieces fall into place ... but I don't wear sweaters so friends and family were usually the recipients of what I made - always specifically decieded upon for that person anyway. I also do counted cross stitch and have done some really beautiful patterns ... mainly of women (different times, cultures, etc.) But have also done various other types as gifts for others. I hand bead onto fabric for projects ... even have done some heavily hand beaded lamp shades for special gifts for friends. I crochet (though I really prefer knitting). I write poetry and songs and sing as well ... ..... blah blah blah .... :)

I do have to say that people have often asked me how much I would charge for a certain item and other then a few things that I have done for charity auctions, I always tell them that they couldn't afford to pay me enough, but someday I might gladly do it for caring/love.

Woodworking has become my passion...in spite of the fact that it puts my fingers at risk with power tools (I can see myself losing a finger & never playing the guitar again...<<shudder>>>) but the joy of taking dead trees & massaging the grain into something pretty is addictive...I make jewelry/keepsake boxes & wind chimes & spinners...Lilith has one of each of my wind thingies, also I sold one to SS some time back...trying to make it a paying hobby on eBay...anyway, here's a few that I only have pics to remind me of...

Yay Cherrypie - I make soap too! Well, I actually haven't done any for quite a while, because as you say it's tedious, and I struggle to get the time and money for ingredients, but it's something I love. I've actually concentrated more on cosmetics like lip balms, hand creams, etc of late, but have promised myself I'm going to do more soap in the new year.

I also love to cook and make/ decorate cakes for special occasions.

However my biggest hobby is not something I make but something I do - this:-

I'm performing in Pantomime all this week. :D

Most definitely!!! I used to work on it in my spare time, in between other projects. Then it sat for a year in my son's garage, and for another year after it finally got brought down here. Only needed two more squares made and the last 3 rows assembled and attached. I'm just so glad it's done. And it's ALL MINE!! :D I'm not giving it away like I do most things I make.

WOW! You guys are so talented! I love seeing all the creativness here at Pixies.

I wanted to contribute to this thread as well...so here goes...

Here's one of the wing back chirs my mother-in-law gave me (I have a pair). This is it in it's original state...never been worked on...around since the dawn of lime green velvet textile. So, you see why I had to reupholster it...eh?

LixyChick

So...here's what I did to them (2 chairs)...

LixyChick
01-09-2005, 05:28 PM
So...Christmas came so fast (and I hate sewing when I come home from work), and I didn't get them complete. I did enough to one so that I could put it against the wall and show my mother-in-law when she visited. She exclaimed, "You know they were only loaners, don't you"? LOL!

I have to finish them with the help of an upholsterer friend at work. The outside back is a pip to do and I can't go any further without his aid.

LixyChick
01-09-2005, 05:32 PM
In the meantime, I got ambitious and made a pattern (from scratch...a first for me) for my dining chairs and made custom chair pads to "finish" off the room's new look.

P.S. Don't ya just love that Santa rug under my table? My nephew worked for Home Depot and gave us the sample for the sales staff. It's incredible in detail...and free to us!

LixyChick
01-09-2005, 05:36 PM
And here's the room to date...as my mom-in-law saw it...

Thanks for looking. I'm kinda proud of how the new stuff turned out and how it makes the room more "me".
