Inmates pop out for beer
Tennessee - With their cell doors accidentally left unlocked, four county jail inmates escaped only to return the same night - with beer.
The Hawkins County Jail inmates, who bought four cases of beer before returning to the jail, were charged on Monday with escape and introduction of intoxicants into a penal institution, the Kingsport Times-News newspaper reported on Tuesday.
"I guess they thought if they came back they wouldn't be charged with escape, but they were wrong," Sheriff Warren Rimer said.
Ridgy Dean Coleman, Jimmy Joe Stapleton, David Wayne Blizzard and David Allen Hopkins escaped on Thursday night when their cell block doors were unlocked and a faulty control panel failed to alert jailers, Rimer said.
Two of the inmates walked out through a fire exit, left the door propped open with a small Bible and made a hole in the exercise yard fence. They walked to a nearby market and bought the beer.
The inmates did not raise alarm at the store because they were wearing street clothes borrowed from other prisoners. The crowded jail doesn't have enough orange jumpsuits for all of its inmates.
The sheriff pointed out that all 36 inmates on the cell block might have tried to escaped while the doors were unlocked.
"At least they came back," he said.

I was listening to As It Happens. They were interviewing the Sherif. He did not sound too amused about the break out and the publicity it has recieving. I want to know what brand of beer they bought.

I thought that the funniest thing was that they used a Bible to hold the door!
They must have FOUND religion!
I don't know why they went out for alcohol!ANYTHING is available,in jail,if you
know they right people.
Maybe,they didn't like "Pruno"(Homemade jailhouse booze)! Irish
P.S.I had a buddy, that drank nosedrops! The guards used to "sneak" it to him!
When the guards, came to work,no one questioned their having a bottle of
nosedrops. :jester:

My prevoious thread, was funny, but true. The person was in jail, for things, that he did becase he is an Alcoholic. Now he is a nosedropaholic!I was riding in his
car one day & I thought that he was coughing. His hand was up to his mouth,
not because he was coughing but because he was swigging from a bottle of
nosedrops. He gets, violently, ill after drinking them but is addicted! Irish
P.S.Your legal system,at work!
P.P.S.I've heard of Alcoholics Anonomous & Narconon(sp?) but never
Dropaholics Anonomous!

lakritze---Pruno,is homemade jailhouse booze.I don't think that it has prunes,
in it but they, probably, could be used!It doesn't taste very good, but has the
same effects.(Any port,in a storm!) Irish

I've heard that GI's used to improvise making booze out of raisins, maybe that's related to Pruno...you can make alcoholic beverages out of about anything that has sugar in it, or even starches that can convert to sugars (don't they make vodka from potatoes?)

Scotz---When I was in the service, the things that you could make the MOST
money on,were cigarettes & Liquor.We waited & took orders,when going on
Alert Duty.You could bring back,one US Gal./month,duty free,thru customs.
When you landed there would be Customs Officers, waiting to inspect your
belongings. One place was Goose Bay Labrador. They had a "Class 6"store
(Liquor Store)One US Gal is 120oz.For EX:A 40 oz of CC was $3.00.VO(Crown
Royale)was $3.00.Smirnov(sp?)100% Vodka was $2.00.For,the expendature,
of $8.00,you could REALLY make out.Plus, the flight from GB to Pease AFB was
??hrs.Everyone on board, would chip-in on one bottle,to drink on the way back. Irish
P.S.When the planes would return,from any where,a write-up sheet,was left
for the descrepancies,& the mechanics,electricians,hydraulic(sp?)etc.to fix,&
write the corrective action!
Favorite Write-up Sheet---RADAR INOPERATIVE!(B47)
Corrective Action Sheet---Removed Liquor from Radar Compartment! :jester:
