VINELAND -- A half-naked city man apparently was
driving his car while having sex with a passenger when
the vehicle slammed into a utility pole, according to
police.
Both occupants were hospitalized after the crash,
which occurred around 9:30 p.m. Monday on East Oak
Road about 400 feet east of the Boulevard.
The victims -- Carl Nunez, 18, of Plum Street and
passenger Nicole Dougherty, 18, of North Maple Drive
-- were unconscious when authorities arrived at the
scene and neither was wearing a seat belt, police
said.
Dougherty was lying on the ground next to the open
driver's door of the 1989 Mitsubishi, police said. Her
underwear was on the passenger seat and some of her
hair was embedded in the dented windshield's broken
glass, police said.
Nunez was naked from the waist down with his underwear
below his knees, according to a police report.
A witness told police he saw the car headed north on
the Boulevard, traveling at a high rate of speed,
before it turned onto Oak Road. According to police,
the witness said he saw a female passenger climb on
top of the driver and move as if the couple were
having sex. Then he saw the car veer off the road,
hitting a mailbox and a utility pole.
Vineland Municipal Electric Utility crews replaced the
pole Tuesday morning.
Police said they found an open bottle of Corona beer
and the broken remains of a second beer bottle inside
the car.
Nunez was issued a summons for allegedly driving
without insurance. Other charges are pending
completion of the investigation, police said.
Dougherty, who suffered head wounds and other injures,
was in stable condition Wednesday at Cooper University
Hospital in Camden. Nunez underwent surgery at South
Jersey Healthcare, Newcomb Hospital and was listed in
serious condition.
