I'd say most men feel the way Coaster and treeview do about breasts, actually.

I believe that men lust after the women who aren't afraid to show a little skin, and it just happens that the women who do that tend to be the ones who feel they can (there are only two types of women who can wear skimpy tops: women with flat chests or women with fake ones who don't have to wear a bra.)

It's easy for you to say that surgery is unnecessary, but infact, over sized breasts can caused increased health problems, not to mention physical pain and emotional and confidence problems.

As I have said, I have very large breasts, and I really don't see my flatter chested friends envying me: they say, 'I want bigger breasts, but not as big as yours, Lou'. The truth is having big breasts makes people change the way they treat you, partly because of the way you have to dress (clothes are either too tight and revealing, in which case you're treated like you're easy, or they are big and baggy, even around your slender parts, which makes you look frumpy and people - especially men - overlook you).

With all due respect, try being a big breasted woman for a week, and then see if you feel the same way!

By the way, I personally would never consider having surgery, so in this post, I'm actually defending a personal viewpoint, which isn't my own.

Just a further elaboration on your "instinctual" comment, I saw a show on Discovery/TLC some years back, where host Desmond Morris pointed out the similarity of a nicely rounded pair of breasts to a nicely rounded butt; the theory is that when our ancestors got up off of all fours, the women who presented a frontal display as well as a nice backside had an increased chance of attracting a mate - even at some distance. Over many generations, that advantage was passed down, but not being an absolute necessity, we have the wonderful variety of sizes & shapes we see today.

Your body is your body. A very important fact to be remembered. Another fact I have come to realize (and yes, it is my carefully observed opinion) - is that big tits the woman do not make, or in plain language, tits don't make you who you are. Your life experiences, studies, hormones and passions do more to define you than any single body part.

A favorite expression of mine has been "small breasted women try harder". I've dated small breasted women most often throughout my life because the larger breasted ones acted as if the world owed them because of their larger tits. It is also interesting that the big tit thing is primarily an American thing, Europe, Africa and Asia don't appear to care one way or the other.
