so don't tear off my head off too much. just a thought that popped up in my head while i was chattin away in the chat room. i can't say that i watch that much television, so this is just based on some quick observations in the recent year.
nowadays, the networks seem to be doing just a bit better with homophobia. there seems to be more programs with them in fashion shows, drama shows, or even house decorating programs.
now, while we are slowly being told that being gay is something to accept, how about lesbians? mostly it still seems to portray the lipstick image that men fantasize about. (again, i channel surf quite fast so not sure if there are many shows regarding the situation.)
so the question is this. is the sexism card still being played, even though the men are gay? does a gay man somehow have more insight then a lesbian? like i said with the title, this is just a random thought, so feel free to take this discussion any way you want to.

Scorp,
There's still a long, long way to go. For both genders and orientations.

I just read a NY Times article on a show that's on HBO (I think) that deals with lesbians in a realistic fashion. It's called "The L Word" or something like that. L something anyway.
The article was written by a lesbian and she was quite complimentary.

I must say at this!!!
THE "L WORD" ROCKS!!!!
(Showtime)
Ok, I have only seen part of one episode, and it was a little melodramatic, but so are the lives of a lot of my friends.
I think Hollywood has become a little less threatened by Lesbians and Bi Women. I am not sure why we are a threat, maybe there are scared old men running things who are afraid that we would be better at pleasing their trophy wives and mistresses?
Also, some good Lesbian -Bi -Trans movies have been done recently. I think the funniest, sweetest, and maybe most real was "Better than Chocolate" It was very accurate, and very funny. I am not saying they got it all right. I mean, I don't even KNOW any trans, and I find it odd that a M to F trans would choose to become a Lesbian. But maybe I am just stupid....
"Go Fish" was fun, but 'WAY to close to home. I also have been verbally brutalized by my own sisters over my persistent attraction to and sexual encounters with men.
(I mean, it's not like I am getting married again, and they are so strong, and sometimes useful, and when they know how to dance, and are at least a LITTLE trainable... )
*ahem* I am off the subject here. Sorry.
Ellen Degeneres was treated badly, her show suddenly seemed to vanish, but not every Hollywood woman in a long term relationship with another woman is bothered. Lilly Tomlin, (a long time secret crush) and Jodie Foster, (a not so secret crush) both in long terms relationships with other women, and they have the power to be left alone.
I am more afraid of being assaulted, trashed, iced, beered, (I mean having stuff dropped on me from bar balconies) when I am out with a GF, than any other time. Holding hands can be dangerous, and kissing? DON"T GET ME GOING ON THAT!!!
Then there is the issue of Gay vs. Lesbian politics. It is a sad fact that the gays have more control over the GLBT Center here. The women always seem to get pushed out.
Plus we have bed death to deal with!!!!

Am I understanding "bed death" correctly when I summarize it as: Lesbians sexual relationships lose the spark and oomph faster than heterosexual sexual relationships?

I would agree that in Britain there are far more male celebrities who are 'out' than females, and it seems to be more acceptable for men to be gay than women, on tv, but oh how the tables are turned when it comes to porn!!!!!!!!!!
You can pick up just about any 'straight' porn video and there will be girl on girl action, but has anyone ever seen 'straight' porn with even the slightest hint of guy on guy stuff happening?! Hmmm...methinks this is because of another old sexist belief that porn is for men only, not women.....grrrrr.
Seems so very odd that as a society we accept male homosexuals more than we accept female homosexuals, but when it comes to the actual act of homosexual sex, society is more accepting of and interested in female homosexuality. Strange, but certainly true in my neck of the woods, at least.....

Could it be that gays are more overtly into sex than lesbians? (No - please don't shoot me - it was just a thought.) You know how men are written of as sex-men, so having two of them together, well, it stands to reason....
On the other hand, real lesbians on television seem to be more about politics than sex. Certainly the ones I know don't seem to be troubled by it at all.
So - who wants a television show about the real lives of lesbians? If - as we are led to believe - attractive young gays spend their untroubled lives getting sex in all corners, well, that makes good television, right?

"Lesbian Bed Death"
Is one of those hot button ( No pun meant, honest!!! LOL ) topics in Lesbian politics and social discusions.
Supposedly, in long term relationships, our sexual activity drops off after awhile, sometimes to nothing.
I have sisters who argue this is a myth, but in my own experiences it has happened. In my case I ended the relationship.
It is normal for us to have a LOT of sex in a new relationship,
learning your new partner, her body, her repsonses, maybe even trying a few fantasies on each other. And things do settle down. But sex between two women is so different.
There is a joke among us, "sex between two women is a lot like sex between a man and a woman, it just take 40 minutes longer, and you orgasm more."
I am not knocking men here. I love you all, and I am as cock hugry as any other woman, believe me. But if I have sex 4 times in a month with my partner, that is likely as much time spent having sex with a man 20 times.
Also, there is nesting to consider. We tend to spend time arranging our homes and lives to make us feel at home. I know men dot, but there is a difference.
Add children to the mix (yes lesbians do have kids) and the world has to be re-arranged again.
But sometimes the enrgy leaves, and months go by without much happening beyond a little hand holding.
We talk, we argue, negotiate, and sometimes we breakup.
Life is complicated when you explore new things constantly

ok, let me try this again, the last one didn't post.
I think I must be living on a different planet than most of you.
I for one see just the opposite in my circles... Lesbians are far more accepted than gay men in our society. I've literally traveled the world, and have found little change in this mentality. In many cases with lesbians and especially bi ladies, they are encouraged by their friends and significant others. However, gay men are almost always discouraged from such activities.
Many of you may think me homophobic, but I'm not politically correct. But I feel uncomfortable when in the general area of a man that I know to be gay. But on the other hand I know several openly lesbian, and bi ladies, and being in close contact with them doesn't bother me at all, and no its not because of the fantacy factor, I simply have no problem accepting them for who they are and what they do.
I think that part of the problem is that lesbian and bi ladies are confident in who they are and what they want from life. They usually don't seek acceptance of their sexuality in an open way. Whereas, gay men seem to have a need to portray themselves as gay in flamboiant ways. Gay me are more concerned with flaunting their sexuality in the face of the world, and attempting to make every accept them regardless of their choices. But lesbians and bi ladies are more concerned with being accepted by their partners and friends.
Regarding the entertainment industry. I lived in southern California for about 7 years, and noted that there seems to be a higher than normal population of gay men living there. As many of them work in the entertainment industry, it provides them with the means to once again flaunt their sexuality in the faces of millions. They seem to have an agenda of initially desensitizing the population by slowly introducing gay sceans on television and movies in hopes their situations will be so commonplace that no one really notices any more. Somewhat like they have done with murder. The television public are not nearly as shocked and appauld by murder now, as they were just 30 years ago. Primarily because we can literally watch 20-30 people being killed every night on tv.
In a nutshell, Lesbian and bi ladies are comfortable with who they are and where they are going. Gay men just simply keep shoving it down everyones throat hoping that one day it will be ok.
Just my 2 cents worth....

Just a quick thought here....(waits for the belly laughing to sudside).......
There has always been a double standard in sexuality in film and TV. For example.....you'll see more full body nude shots of females....but not of males (because their genitalia is exposed).
My thinking as to male homosexuals being more prevalent......is that on TV......they never did "show the full monty" anyway.....so what's a kiss or a holding of the hand or a couple living together (notice no bedroom scenes on prime time TV as yet).....besides a teeny, tiny step into reality? But, if they were to really let loose and make more lesbian shows.....well.....how could they stop at just the kiss when we've seen so much more of all women as opposed to all men?

I just wanted to comment on this statement you made Wanda. A very good friend of mine is a well respected (semi-retired) domme in the area, and I actually asked her this same question one day, why was it she got so many requests from Tranny subs. What she told me was somewhat suprising, but made sense:
While a tranny can get surgery done, and even injected with estrogen, she still cannot truly become femminine. Since there is a certain energy that females carry, that is very different than men (this is what my friend said, and after thinking about it for a while I think I have to agree with her), a transvestite can never achieve that, so in general, they will gravitate towards that which is feminine. I hope I explained this clearly, but this conversation took place a long time ago so if I failed I do apologize :)
Sorry for the minor derail
