Yesterday, December 29, the Humane Society finally captured an emu in central Maryland, having received several reports about the bird over the last few days. Not the sort of animal one expects to see in the northeast of the US.
Which leads me to ask does anyone here have an unusual pet? Did anyone get or give one for Christmas?

We have emus and ostrich farms here in Northern Fl. No odd pets here other than caterpillars in the spring. I have never given a pet as a gift.

There are a lot of emu and ostrich farms all over Canada, too.
I would love to have another puppy but I'd like to have a few weeks off from work to deal with the housebreaking, training, etc.

Someone I know keeps 2 ferretts. In the months leading up to before he got them, I was determined not to touch them, but they're really nice actually, despite the stink.
I've had a few nips off them.

Oh WOW Sharni! I've never heard of that critter! He is quite a cutie!
I live near a farm which has buffalo and peacocks........and it's just as odd as you are imagining.....seeing them in the fields together! I full expect to see pretty tail feathers on the buffalo one day! I don't quite understand the combination.......and hubby proved that they did exist together.....one day, several years ago......on April 1rst (April fool's day).......and so you can imagine my response till he proved it!
My cat (Rocky) won't let me have any other pets........so I have to wait till he gives his approval or croaks! Arrgggg!

We used to have a few ferrets but now all we have is a cat and a dog.

he he he... there is an Ostrich farm out here in western NY... nothing funnier than driving down the thru-way (insterstate, M, highway, toll road) during a snow storm and seeing them all walking around like nothing is happening :D

Axolatl.
But you're right, he is cute.
It should come as no surprise that I own an iguana, my wife owns a bearded dragon, and our daughter owns a bell's hingeback tortoise.

Looking at that picture, I can't work out for the life of me what that is.

Sharniqua,
Excuse my naiveté, but it looks rather like a salamander. Are they related?
