The following scene took place on a BA flight between Johannesburg and London.
A white woman, about 50 years old, was seated next to a black man. Obviously disturbed by this, she called the air Hostess.
"Madam, what is the matter?" the hostess asked
"You obviously do not see it then?" she responded. "You placed me next to a black man. I do not agree to sit next to someone from such a repugnant group. Give me an alternative seat."
"Be calm please", the hostess replied. "Almost all the places on this flight are taken. I will go to see if another place is available."
The Hostess went away and then came back a few minutes later.
"Madam, just as I thought, there are no other available seats in the economy class. I spoke to the captain and he informed me that there is also no seat in the business class. All the same, we still have one place in the first class."
Before the woman could say anything, the hostess continued.
"It is not usual for our company to permit someone from the economy class to sit in the first class However, given the circumstances, the captain feels that it would be scandalous to make someone sit next to someone sooooo disgusting."
She turned to the black guy, and said. "Therefore, Sir, if you would like to, please take your hand luggage because a seat awaits you in the first class. "
At the moment, the other passengers who were shocked by what they had just witnessed stood up and applauded.
This is a true story which is not usually told.
Serves her bloodywell right!

There are only two races on this Earth, the tolerants and the
bigots. I accept the title of racist because I have a real
problem with bigots.

Gentlefolk,
The only thing we can do is to keep trying. Racial discrimination has been, and remains a tough row to hoe.
Some day, perhaps my grandchildren won't understand what the issues were. At least that's what I hope will happen.

And before this thread floats into oblivion.......
I just want to say that I hate racisim.....and I especially hate bigots who feel a need to relate to me on some level just to qualify their ignorance and hatred.........when we know damn right well we are of one race................HUMAN........and I'll never tolerate a joke, or slur, or reference of ignorance just because I'm in a public forum! I've had people try and tell jokes to me.....and when I realize what it is they are doing....I stop them dead in their tracks and tell them they should know who they are talking to before they continue the thought....and I proceed to tell them about me and my opinions (because they didn't care to find out my feelings.......and just because I am white.....figure I'll laugh at their shit talk). I've been at parties with my best friend's parents (big, big bigots) and I've never backed down from my principals....and they tend to think I am a party pooper when the jokes and inuendos begin to fly.......but I am me and I won't let them drag me down to their level!
I've just barely made it into the millenium...(ie: I just got a DVD player and a turntable in my microwave oven)....but I'll be damned that if..... in this day and age.....with all the struggle of disease and global warming and hunger and strife (housing, starvation..etc.)....you can bring me back to the days when we bitch that because your skin is not my color...I will discriminate against you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So call me a bigot..........because I hate bigots!

LixyChick,
Channel your outrage. Put it to use changing the world. Lord knows it can be a better place than it is. Always try to remain civil, even when the circumstances justify ranting - I'll bet you'll get better results.

jseal hun!
Trust me in my diplomacy and treatment of ignorance! I don't just go off and rant! Never said I did! I have very ingenious ways of making people see themselves for what they truley are! I've never been anything but civil.....and there have been a few times when I actually saw a reflection of introspect on the faces of those I didn't back down from.
I've learned through the years.......that most bigots want an army at their side......and so they chatter and balk and joke of their thoughts and feelings aloud....till they find someone to side with them and then they think they've become stronger! Well.....not with me around........just ask my husband (who's entire family are bigots.......though they proclaim not to be after every racial slur they spew!)
I may go on and on here...as if I have no point or direction......but tis the loss in type you miss in knowing me for me!
*hugs*

LixyChick,
Excellent! I shouldn’t have doubted that for a moment! With attitudes as difficult to change as these, the best way of battling them is not letting the bad behavior pass without challenge – but the challenge can be pointed without being uncivil.
Look at the example. The woman’s coarse and unpleasant behavior was illuminated and then publicly derided without stooping to her level. Not, I suspect, that she will ever change, but the others will remember that a bad apple was identified – and why.
We may never know, but I suspect that the reason they appear to need the support of others is because they are not at all confident that their feelings are appropriate. A "strength in numbers" mentality perhaps. People with a better grasp of psychology may be able to provide better insights.
I must admit a certain pessimism on this subject. While the goal of eliminating the behavior is laudable, I suspect that in the end the best that can be hoped for is to marginalize those who refuse, or are unable to move beyond such limiting behavior. Still, we must stay the course and hope – and work - for the best. Your comment "…and there have been a few times when I actually saw a reflection of introspect on the faces of those I didn't back down from" is encouraging.
Thanks.
