View Full Version : Dentist Visit from Hell

I had the absolute worst dentist visit yesterday. I went in because I had a hole in my tooth. I expected a filling or a cap. Instead I got oral surgery right there in the office...awake. I have been reduced to taking pain pills and licking oatmeal from a spoon for nourishment

Poor you sweetie. :(

*Lavishing attention on Scarlett - fussing around her, offering to make drinks, plump up pillows and fetch blankets*

Ahhh smoothies sound great, but I was told not to drink from a straw for a week. The pain pills aren't strong enough to knock me out either
Your sympathy is making me feel better already. I just needed a pity party ;) Thank you Lilith, Aqua, Loulabelle and Randygal.

I feel your pain, Scarlett! Ouch!!! Why didn't they put you under?

I sorta chuckled at the 'licking a spoon for nourishment' line. Is that wrong? :)

I had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled at one time, dry sockets.......... oh the pain...... I tried just about everything to dull it, my pain pills didn't work either. What I did do was go to the pharmacy and purchased some cough syrup w/codeine (you have to ask the pharmasyst for it, and you don't need a prescription for it in my state) in it and took a few spoonfulls and held that in my mouth... that helped tremendously!!!

Steph, they didn't even think of putting me under, I guess. he gave me 4 shots in my gums and 1 in the roof of my mouth. That one was the worst.
I meant for the spoon licking to be funny :) At least you just chuckled, my Mom laughed out loud.
I am deathly afraid of dry socket! I am obeying all commands to keep from getting it. I already have some Tylenol with codeine. I will keep your suggestion in mind Cheyanne, in case it all gets worse.

I actually did laugh out loud, I just didn't want to sound mean if you were serious :)

UGH! Dry sockets!!!!!!! Cheyanne, the horror!

I looked up dry socket and now it makes more sense to me. I never really knew what it was. I am doing all I can to avoid it. From what I understand it usually happens on the third day, so if I make it through tomorrow, I should be safe.
I can actually eat a little today. I just had mac n cheese and it seemed like a gourmet meal to me :D
The upside: I am losing weight.

Dry socket? Arrgggggggg! A soaked tea bag (not hot) sitting on the hole left after removal might curtail the onset.......just don't talk much for the first few days. Keep the tea bag very moist and hope for the best as dry socket seems to happen no matter how well you care for the open space.

*hands Scarlett some Lipton™ tea bags and some vicodin* Have some pain pills left over from my last visit to docs for my monthly.......oh never mind.....just had some left over and they are pretty good! Want some Jello™ too?

I told the dentist not to give me codeine because it makes be sick. I got Darvoset but it has to be the lowest dosage known to man.

Codeine makes me itch.......and I mean itch......which is one of the bad side effects of it. But.........I don't tell my doc that cause I don't have any side effect more severe than that and when I need a pain pill I want it to be worth my while! LOL!

As for it making you sick Scarlett........do you mean nauseous? Cause if you do mean nauseous it could be that you take it on an empty stomach and drink TOO much liquid with it and just after it. It does that to me too at times when I'm not thinking but just want to get rid of the pain! Just a thought.......I don't want to sound like a "pusher" or something....LOL!

:D Lixy. Yes, it makes me throw up.
The pain hasn't been awfully bad this time around. The Darvoset I have is working pretty good, it just doesn't knock me out like I had hoped. I think (hope) I am over the worst of it now. Today was the 4th day since the extraction.

Just an idea, but if codeine makes you sick and the Tylenol in it is just Tylenol, have you tried just plain ibuprofen? It reduces swelling, it worked for me the last time I had a tooth pulled (last month). I took that because the pain pills were too expensive.

And now I go next week for two root canals, and I can't take pain pills because I'm pregnant. So #1 thanks for everyone's advise when I get tooth work done, and Scarlett let me know what ends up working!

ps: the worst pain in my life was getting a shot at the dentist in the roof of my mouth. It honestly hurt worse than labor! Well the first 15 hours of labor anyway

Get Well Soon!

Yep, that shot in the roof of the mouth actually brought tears to my eyes. That was the worst!
You are right about the ibuprofen. I have been taking it during the daytime and it does help. It doesn't work as quickly as the Darvoset, but it works :) The only time I hurt now is when I chew too much. I just have to take it easy on the eating.

Good luck with the root canals Kissyface. That was one reason I chose to have the tooth pulled...to avoid a root canal.
