View Full Version : Ethical Question

This has been nagging me for quite some time and so I have to ask for some opinions. Please be serious........I need to know!
In light of the news of the so-called "human" cloning going on, we have to ask ourselves this hypothetical question..........
If you pushed your naked clone off the top of a very tall building, would it be......
A) murder
B) suicide
C) merely making an obscene clone fall
???????????????????????????????????

LixyChick,
You mix ethics and humor well.

I don't know Lixy. I'm still trying to figure out if a person with multiple personalities threatens suicide, is that considered a hostage situation? ;)

Thanks jseal........I try!
And PF??? Don't answer a question with another question. I'm not lying on a sofa in your office ya know!? Geezzzz!

For the first few years of cloning it will be considered C) merely making an obscene clone fall. But once the clones realize that this is the case they will push the government for making it A) murder.
So in this serious persons eyes! Everyone better get to pushing! hehe
;) :) :D

Would have been a great question...but you had to go and throw in a pun....
Took the pun right out of it... :D
LixyChick
05-09-2003, 12:34 PM
Pardon me.........but what "pun" is it if you can't laugh at a clone?
OK......since you think so.........consider it a "real" question and give me an ethical answer!
Would it be....
A) Murder
B) Suicide
C) None of the above....as clones are replaceable
skipthisone
05-09-2003, 01:07 PM
Hmmm, mine would have to be C...not replaceable though....the destruction would be mandatory as it shouldnt exist.

Jumping in deeper here...........
And why, pray tell, "shouldn't" they exist? This, to me, is like saying doctors shouldn't try to play "God"..........but in truth......(if you believe in the notion of God).....we wouldn't have doctors if they weren't part of the ENTIRE scheme of things that are to be!
Oh damn.........here we go...................
To heal or delay death is one thing
To create artificial life is something entirely different.

I agree with Aqua. Nothing to do with God or anything. I just know just enough about cloning to know that it is so extremelly complex and exact and that we as flawed beings will never ever get it perfect....

And I need to make a correction here.......
My actual thought (but didn't convey it well) was.......
What about the people who believe "God" will take care of their sick and ailing and they will never take them to a doctor......even if a tiny shot of antibiotic would cure the patient. Now....the thought here, to me is, if "God" is the creator.......and he created all of us in his image..........why is it that doctors are excluded in this thought process (to those of that thinking)......??
And........so.....therefore.........If "He" created the people who created cloning.......well....you get the gist, I hope!

Creating a life and fixing a life that is broken are two different things.

I'd consider it murder. So what if that person's entire genetic makeup was identical to mine? That sheep that was a result of cloning was no less a sheep than the one from which she was cloned. I couldn't see killing any clone just because it supposedly is a carbon copy, just like I can't see killing a person with Down syndrome, just because their DNA contains a genetic flaw.

So.....anyway!
Didn't really mean to get this "deep" here! I was just being silly on a Friday day off from work and um...........
OK.....I won't cop out on this if we must go there........but I promise........I was just making a joke! And while I'm on the subject so seriously..........all you mother's and father's out there have "created" a life in "your own" way. Who's to say what's right and wrong in this day and age? There's "the old fashioned way" and there are "test-tube" babies and fertilization drugs and adoption when one can't conceive........and I know that cloning for cloning's sake is now considered to be a way to extend ones own life..........(like we need to live longer and congest this planet more than it already is).....but, who's to say what is right and what is wrong? It's a personal opinion.....that's all. A personal ethic that you live and breathe by and no one.....not even me.....can change your mind! I wouldn't even want to try! The reason I continue this thought now is because there are always two sides to every thought.......and I don't consider either one right or wrong! Life goes on..................

what about t-cell cloneing? that has not been mentioned so far and has been baned by the gov't under cloning laws. what about that side of it. if you could reconstruct a liver from the tissue of a ombilical cord, to be a liver in another person, would that be unethical? how about a pancreas? a kidney? a heart?
bush stopped t-cell research in '91 because of the ban on cloneing. makes you wonder.

Hi and Welcum to Pixies lostintexas!
T-cell cloning is absolutely the greatest thing since sliced bread or since the wheel was made round.........
Please don't get me wrong here.........I love that you jumped in and I agree with your opinion wholeheartidly........
but I promise, swear, pinkie swear...........initially, this was a pun.......regardless of the fact that I said to be honest.
I spose I could open up another thread to this topic..........but.......oh damn, shit, damn.........I don't feel like it now! LOL!

it just depends on your prospective....
on one side it is funny and the joke that you made is funny dont get me wrong.
be gentic research can and will change the lives of every american in the next year.
i wish that more people had realizied what they were banning when when they banned t-cell research. it was (is) a life saver to alot of people out there!

In the all and all scheme of things.......and hindsight being what it is to you and I.....and everyone who has said......."Oh, Damn...what was I thinking"?..............
I think, in hindsight to the topic............we are rethinking our original thoughts! But.......and this is the major/minor flaw here......we can't un-do what we've already done........we can just march forth and hope the damage can be controlled/curtailed!
Don't fret too much hun...........this is life and it's best and worst! Make a way through it!

there is no way way of making it through it, i am going to die from a disease that could have been cured from this research. like diabeties, heart problems, liver problems. these could have been cured with research. but the liberal media made it sound like we were killing unborn babies to get this far in a search for a cure.
all i want is a cure to the disease that i have, i am not talking about killing babies but about the ambilical cord that "might" cure me. would you want that choice? i do!

yes you can undue it you have a "VOTE"!

Calm down hun! I ain't the villian! If you are of proper age to be on this site........there was NO such thing as stem cell research when you were born. It's so very new that it had to be researched! My niece just had a baby and donated stem cells for storage at an additional cost to her birthing cost (as far as I understood it).
Everything ever worth getting.......had to be fought for! The FDA and all the other "red tape" authorities don't just sit around and say.......hmmmm......ok that goes.....nope, that doesn't! It's a process..........and this isn't the first of it's kind. They aren't "holding out" to spite you.....or anyone in your situation.....for that matter.....whatever your situation might be.
This thread wasn't put here to anger anyone. I'll listen if you promise not to take all my words out of context again!
And just a little 411..........I do vote with each and every election.......so stop judging me before you even know anything about me!

guess this is another........no black or white~~~~only shades of grey!
this is a grey matter and i did not mean to "go off" on lixy and am sorry if she thought that my comments were aimed at her.
my comments were made to make people think about what could be done if cloning of human cells (t-cells is my point but there are others) were allowed.
i will explain what a t-cell is :
a t-cell can become any other cell in the human body and is only availible from the umbilical cord and from a fetus. i am not for abortion so the only way to get enouph from an umbilical cord is to clone it.
a t-cell can become heart tissue to repair/replace heart tissue
a t-cell can become liver tissue to repair/replace liver tissue
a t-cell can become nerve cells to repair the spinal cord
a t-cell can become pancrease tissue to cure diabetes
that was my point in my post, not to bash anyone, i am sorry if i did. forgive me , i am sorry. this is just a touchy subject with me.

Okay, now, if your mom cloned herself ... oh, say, 50 times. On Mother's Day do you have to send flowers to all 51?
They used to joke that in the hill country if you divorced your wife, would she still be your sister? Now the answer's not so easy. Might it be possible to end up with a biological mom younger than her biological son? Could she actually be born before the current biological dad? Could the son create the parents?
I think I want to become a lawyer.
NOT.
I've got a headache. Excuse me, I think I'll go over to the million post thread and see if I can suck on Lixy's nipples. It's all her fault. :D

In the UK the clone would have to have an erection to be considered indecent. But then in Germany it might depend on how decent his erection was.
