Last night I was feeling so bad about the 19 year old female soldier they have captured, thinking of all the nasty atrocities she is being forced to endure. Then I realized how sexist I was being. I have been searching this morning on the web for articles relating to the statistic of male POWs subjected to rape by their captors, all I can find are prison statistics and I am specifically seeking war figures. If anyone can help me out I'd appreciate a link. You can pm it to me or drop it here. Thanks!!!

I can't give you wartime statistics,but I was sentenced(years ago)
to 3yrs.1day(The day means No Parole)in the State Prison for
Aggravated Assault.By paying the right people,I didn't do the time,But I can tell you that the thing that scared me the most, was
Rape. You get raped on purpose! It's not for sex. It's to show you
that no matter how tough, you think that you are, they can do it.
My father was an excop,so I didn't have alot of respect for the law, after hearing what went on but after that,I lost ALL respect.
It's not what you have done.It's who you know& how much money,you have.It cost me $500!I don't know who got the money.I don't care!All that I know is that I got probation,instead
of doing time! Irish
P.S.By the way,it was really self defense, altho I did get a little carried away!

you know...i searched and searched...and all i could find was this:

"[As POW's]...for sexual abuse, they argue that men can be sexually and otherwise abused and humiliated as easily as women."
~POW video reopens gender debate (msn headline news)

i cant find anything else. no essays, statistics, reports...or anything! i even looked up the topic for the older wars. still nothing. perhaps someone will have better luck than i did.

This is what I found as well..........seems odd there are no easily available statistics on all this. Since rape is about power it only seems reasonable that it would be a torture tactic used frequently by captors to humiliate and denegrate POWs.

I don't have any info on this, but I would suspect that any info someone might have would be held under strict confidentiality.... POW's in many cases are kept in solitary situations and even if not, the prisoner mentality would probably be more of US against THEM and working to keep each other up and as strong as possible .... so rapes would generally be by their captors ... but the military, even at the best of times can be a bit "homophobic" and would want to shelter this info from public knowledge.

I do know that during WW II in the German POW camps the standard was much higher in how they treated the POWs then what was the case in the camps holding civilians.

Know that's not what you were looking for either, sorry!

No statistics . . . just found one personal story:

Sexual assault

On some nights, some prisoners would rape others for various reasons. Usually they were the result of personal fights caused by our intolerable conditions.

The sexual assaults did not end there, however. The Iraqi prison wardens also raped the prisoners. They favored the younger prisoners, especially volunteer soldiers who were sometimes as young as 10 or 11 years old.

There were some prisoners who, in return for privileges, would actually search for these boys and pick them out for the Iraqis. These mercenaries -- one of them had the nickname "Mohsen Amrikaie" -- would cloth the boys in Arabic garments, put make-up on them and hand them over for the sexual pleasure of the wardens.

We were watching a news program (48 Hours I think?) tonight and they were interviewing a former POW who happened to be a woman. One of the questions asked of her was about men being raped. Her response was that, yes, it has happened, and probably will continue to happen, but the men will not talk about it like a woman does. The armed services will keep records of what a POW went through physically and mentally once released, but the information probably will not become public knowlege. While captured (in Iraq during Desert Storm - a doctor on a medical helicoptor that went down - they don't care about the Geneva Convention regarding protecting medics during war) she was shot, had 2 broken arms and was raped. Sure, she said it was terrible, but she also stated that she was suffering from so much more that at the time, it was just one more thing.

Not for sure, but it seems like they identified maybe two from a helicopter downed and another 5-10 from that maintenance group who were ambushed ... not counting the two reported gunned down by the Iraqi's as they tried to surrender.

Seems like I also heard one of the news channels identify 20-30 coalition killed.

Again, don't have anything to point to ... just what I think I've heard expressed on news reports from either CNN or Fox.

Also heard of several hundred (300 to 800) Iraqi's killed and about 4,000 captured (or who surrendered).

While I didn't make these numbers up ... there are my "best recollection" and that's coming from someone who sometimes forgets what he did yesterday ... er ... was that the day before.

(Well, I tried, anyway :))

Lilith---I know that this doesn,t have anything to do with what you asked, but thought that people mght find it interesting. They
were talking on the radio, this morning, about how brave the drivers of the ,replensihment, fuel trucks in Iraq had to be.
Yesterday,they showed,on TV,a convoy of fuel trucks,because fuel
was needed by tanks, hummers, etc. What most people don't realise,is that, most of those truck drivers were women! That comrletely ruins the myths of the "macho"men. Irish
P.S.I have two daughters, both very good looking. Both have been models! They grew up around bikers! The older is quite feminine.
The youngest, while very good looking,I would back in a fight against MOST men.I was an "Enforcer"for many motorcycle gangs
and my father did alot of police "undercover"work.Between both of us,she learned alot.I tought my kids, the same as my father
tought me---Don't start a fight, just make sure that you FINISH it!

This morning I scribbled down numbers (before I had to leave) ...

At that time they reported (US casualties only):

28 killed
40 wounded

Probably has changed by now and don't know UK, Australian or Polish numbers. Just pray they are minimal (prefer zero but that's probably not the case).

No word on Iraqi losses but believe it's in the hundreds of troops and 4000 plus captured.

Coalition forces are not estimating civilian losses and Iraq numbers are questionable and probably include many they've killed themselves. Can't believe holding families at gun point while ordering fathers to take a gun and go fight. Barbarians.

The atrocities rain down on all participants and bystanders in the war. Torture, injuries, death, terror...........and I believe it will find its way here as well. The whole mess sickens me. I am deeply saddened at mankinds inability to solve the problem. God have mercy on our souls.
