Just a simple request...... cause enquiring minds need to know ;)

List one thing (more if you want to) that you know or have heard about Canada and Canadians.

It can be historical, current news, myths...anything at all.
Ask questions too if you feel inclined......:D

It snows a lot, and PixieSprite lives there. Sounds a great place :D

It all depends where you live regarding the snowfall. British Columbia very rarely sees snow......whereas the east coast usually gets bombarded.

Vacationed in Canada one time! It was wonderful. But when I went to get gas I had no idea how much I was getting (due to the fact that I couldn't convert gallons to litres....or however thats done). And the speed limits seemed ludicrous to me. I am used to MPH........I had no idea how fast I should be going till I tried to keep up with a little old lady in front of me and discovered I was going much too fast. The nice officer explained it very well!

I also had more money in Canada then if I had stayed in the states to vacation. WooooHooo! Bonus!

The people were extremely friendly! We camped at a provincial park (state park in the U.S.) and took a camp site called "boating in" where you got a canoe and rowed the lake till you came to a site you liked and then you set up camp. Hubby and I thought we found a really secluded site and we set up camp. During the evening it started to rain and our tent filled with water and we had to move to higher ground. While doing this we found that a boat had docked at "our" dock. No one was around and so we figured they were aboard sleeping. Next day we rose and started breakfast and dressed and cleaned up camp and went for a swim and fished.....and still not a peep from that boat. Somewhere around 2pm the boat came alive. Four guys disembarked and started hooting and hollering and partying like crazy! Here I was on a secluded island with 5 men. Could a girl have a better fantasy? They were the cutest guys (all 4 of um) and they were so nice and so fun to hang out with! They had the best beer and pot I have had in years! Oh, that's another thing......in the states the alcohol content of a specific brand name of beer (Labatt's in this case) is less than in Canada. I have never gotten drunk on 3 beers in my life.....but I did on this vacation!

BTW! Those guys would periodically quiz us on what we actually knew of Canada as well. Did we know the current president's name.....etc.? To be honest (and to prolly reveal my stupidity here) I had thought Canada was a parliment and I didn't know at the time that they had an elected president. Boy was my face red! They told us they knew that American's weren't required to learn as much about other countries in school unless they chose to take specific courses on them, but that they (Canadians) are REQUIRED to learn nearly EVERYTHING about America. They joked that they are better citizens of the U.S. than we are, as they knew more about our constitution and the laws of our land than we did. If you think about it, any alien trying to become a citizen of the U.S could make this claim. Tests have proven it!

Also, we noticed as we entered the country that almost everyone seemed to drive with their headlights on. This was around the time when car manufacturers started making cars that when you started the engine the lights would automatically come on and stay on. Now either we hadn't noticed this saftey precaution in the states and it was more pronounced in Canada as we were typical tourists and looking and taking in every site, or this saftey precaution hadn't made it's debut in the states yet. I am not sure to this day about that. But when that nice officer stopped us and explained the "lay of the land", we asked if it was a major holiday in Canada and to show respect all Canadians turned on their headlights while driving. The nice officer (with a grin on his face) explained the saftey precaution to our embarrassed selves.

Anyway........this was also the trip that unconditionally proved to my hubby that I did indeed know my north from my south (I have a terrible sense of direction without a map) and that I could navigate an unknown country and get us back home safely with the help of a map. Perth was beautiful....BTW!

TY for your hospitality Canada!

Oh...and one more thing. Wherever I go I usually pick up the accent almost immediately. I still to this day, say ya'll when I am drunk....from my travels down south. I also now say, eh, alot! Those party boys (from the boat) said it all the time and other than watching The Mckenzie Brothers on Second City TV (The Great White North) I would have never known that. Pretty interesting....eh? LOL!

I took a then-gf through part of Ontario for Labo(u)r Day weekend 1998. We really enjoyed ourselves.

The car thing was a bit different, remembering km/h and buying gasoline by the liter, but not too tricky. I kept a few of the coins, and we picked up a couple of books (Haunted Ontario, and I don't remember the other one). No I've not been to these listed haunted sites, but I'd like to go some time. Heck, there's still all the other provinces too.

Well Lixy you were had......Canada is run by an elected parliment. The party that gets the most votes has a leader he/she becomes the Prime Minister of Canada who heads the Federal Government. Provinces have Premiers who head the provincial goverments........

Years ago there was a far greater requirement in schools to learn about America but this was due to the text books. Back then they were mainly published in the states and of course about the states.

As far as a courtesy to use headlights in this country....it may well be but I have never heard of this as being a sign of respect. The newer cars of course have them on at all times. I tend to flash my lights to oncoming traffic if I have passed a cop to let others know one is ahead waiting for them with radar. Me thinks the cop was grinning for a reason.....the big shit!

And you have been to Perth......love it there. Very quaint area around that region.
Yes we do have the best beer for the money!!!!!! Labatts triple X 12% alcohol.

I still dont get the conversion of the metric system either!!!!! And yes it is true your money goes farther here in Canada than the States and...........SO DOES MINE!!!!!! lmao

Oops! Yeah! Never thought of that........except that I don't know if the pay scale is similar in the states as in Canada. Example....I live in Pa. and if I were to commute to New York to earn a living and still maintain a residence in Pa., I would own a larger more expensive estate than I do currently! If I were to commute to Canada and still maintain citizenship and homeownership in the states, could I still afford the property I own now? That's pretty much what I meant!

Sooooooo......I'd been had, eh? Why I outta go back to Perth and look them fellers up and give em a piece of my........um....mind! LOL! They were so fun.....I have really fantastic memories of that trip....it's spontanaiety.....and the outcome! We left Pa. without an agenda.......and it turns out it was one of my best vacations ever!

Can’t remember ever hearing any serious derogatory comments about it. (That is except for that ONE province that hasn’t gotten the word that you’re no longer a dominion, but a free, independent, federated country now;). Although it’s understandable as they don’t speak the language:rolleyes: )
I know that you are the biggest country on the planet and that 93% of your population lives within 200 miles, (320 Km)of the coastlines or US boarder. I know that my spiritual leader and guru, Red Green, dwells up there:D. And I know that we should be more grateful to you for all the topsoil the glaciers bulldozed from you and dumped for our farmers at the same time they dug out the Great Lakes and gave us the largest fresh water deposit in the world. Sorry we haven’t taken better care of it all:(. I don’t know how you were smart enough to adopt the metric system, like the rest of the world:confused:, when you’re so influenced by the economic and media giant to the south.
I’ve found some of the sexiest ladies at Pixies come from there and one VERY special one:).
I know who’s embassy in Iran gave shelter for six months to Americans when ours was overrun and hostages were held for 449 days.:whiteghos
And I personally found it very novel to see MOOSE CROSSING signs along your major highways.:)

Holy duct tape PF...quick to the bedroom! Red Green is awaiting on the VCR. I am impressed with you(lay back and relax and I will soothe you with the cool cool texture of satin)...actually knowing about that silly province who's leaders think they are part of France. It amazes me to go to Quebec (politically correct pronunciation being "K-beck") for so many there do not know a word of English and even if they do , they won't speak it. We have bilingual signs all over the place in Canada and kids have to learn French in school but the kids in Quebec don't have to learn English!
Oh you hit a nerve I think ;)

I don't think you will find too many Canadians who think health care is "free". We know health care costs are paid from our tax dollars, BUT at the time of need, the care is free and no one has to mortgage their homes or take out loans for operations or treatments. Everyone has coverage for health care here.

BTW Our taxes on purchases is a sales tax of 7%. The other tax is a Goods and Service Tax of 8%, but provinces differ on the sales tax for each province sets their own. The Federal Gov't sets the other tax. No one likes this extra added tax but I think that I would rather pay this tax than to be expected to come up with thousands of dollars in the blink of an eye if I ever needed surgery!

No offense intended, Bibi, but I've had this same discussion with several Canadian buddies of mine. One thing is for certain, the health care debate will continue on both sides of the border.

There is legislation in the US so that noone will be denied emergency medical services regardless of their level of insurance. The quality of health care in the US is generally considered superior, as shown by the number of Canadians who go south of the border to seek treatment.

The bottom line is that he who pays determines the treatment. I would much rather retain my medical decisions than have a the government make those determinations.

Sorry BiBi, I didn’t mean to tweak a soar spot. That’s about the only thing I know of Canada that leaves me uneasy. Please remember that my country is the one that fought one of the bloodiest wars ever:( only because some of its States, that had issues of human slavery that you resolved 100 years before we did, attempted to divide our country. It’s just a personal dislike of the condescending attitudes I found in France itself or any France-wennabes. And I think your right. You’d be very hard pressed to find somebody in your country that doesn’t speak EXCELLENT English or is willing to do so when talking to some one that’s NOT speaking French. LMAO
Right now I wish our ?elected? leader was as subject to collective reasoning as your “figurehead”.
Should we tell Sharni that the RCMP is your equivalent to our FBI. I wonder if she too got to listen to “Sergeant Preston of the Yukon and his dog, Yukon King” on the radio:rolleyes:. Today I feel lucky when I catch “As It Happens” from CBC on NPR. It may brake her heart to know that the red uniforms and horses only come out like those of the Buckingham Palace Guards who wear the 5,600 bear skin hats that were taken at one time from Canada the last time they were replaced.
I know a tiny bit about the VAST resources you have but really want you to tell me more about the recent diamond mine development that may be a rival to the DeBeers diamonds cartel in South Africa.:D

And why DO they make the moose cross those busy highways at those places?

Been to Canada twice. My wife and I made a drive around Lake Superior and thought it was an absolutely beautiful drive. Just wish there were roads down to the lakes we saw sprinkled between the hills.

Then I was in Toronto for a business trip for a week. Great, great city. My brother-in-law flew in on Thursday of that week (he was dating a lady who lived near the lake). They picked me up for dinner at a place on Bloor about two miles or so north of my hotel. Told them I knew where Bloor was. His grilfriend then mentioned a little coffee shop on a side street near there and I responded ... "You mean the one on Yorkshire?" She was amazed I had even found the coffee shop let alone visited it twice. I think there's six square miles of downtown Toronto where I've been on every street. Loved it.

It a beautiful and wonderful country! Glad we're neighbors! :D

It was a Canadian that invented basketball, football, hockey, lacrosse.

It was a Canadian that wrote the 'Star Spangled Banner'!!

Canada has been the only country to successfully invade the USA!

It was a Canadian that invented invented ski-doos, jet-skis, velcro, zippers & zambonis.

Canada has the largest English population that never ever surrendered or withdrew during any war.

Canada has the largest French population that never surrendered to Germany.

In the war of 1812, we pushed the Americans so far back...past their 'White House', we burned it...and most of Washington under the command of William Lyon McKenzie.

The biggest flags ever seen/flown at any Olympics were Canadian....twice.

I am proud to be Canadian. The reason I have for my pride is because my pride is not based on how we invaded other countries, or how compared to other countries how well we are doing. I look at my situation and that of the people around me. Of course, people will live on the moon and still have to find a way to make a living and do things with their time. But when a country is polite and friendly as Canada you know that overall the people must be happy. (Japan is the only other country I can think of that is soo polite, just look at their conduct during international sporting events and you will see what I mean) We know that at the end of the day, we live life not neccesarily the way it was meant to be lived but damn near close as any other people in history have come.

Ohhhh, how I miss my native land! I have been in Argentina for one year, with at least two more to go! I miss the beer, the women, everything! You don't know what you have until it is gone!!!!!!

I look at the Rio de la Plata here and the water looks like chocolate milk with garbage floating in it. Sometimes there is the most disgusting smell that comes off of it. The environment and nature that is available in Canada is sooooo much better.

I barely get any hockey here (and they actually specify hockey sobre hielo, like there is any other *real* kind), the beer is pretty much like American beer, and the women are beautiful but like to keep an asperin tight between their knees.

It was a Canadian that invented invented ski-doos, jet-skis, velcro, zippers & zambonis.
Velcro was invented by Georges de Mestral in 1948 - patented 1957, a Swiss engineer...not sure where Canada comes into that one either...but feel free to enlighten me *L*

There are actually two people who invented the zipper. The first person (Whitcomb Judson) originally invented it, but it was patented by a Canadian. Gideon Sundback (the president of the Lightning Fastener Company) perfected the zipper and was given credit making zippers a common trend.

Let's see, what do I know about Canada, eh?

It's NOT all 'frozen white North"!!

And yes, Scotz, Windsor IS South of Detroit! That's the only place where Canada is actually South of the U.S.

Don't order POUTINE for your french fries!

Their cigarettes cost too darn much, even after figuring in the exchange rate on the money.

They sell milk in plastic bags! They have a cereal named SHREDDIES!!!

Canadian paper money is very pretty! Each denomination is a different color. Their $1 and $2 coins (Loonies and Two-nies) really weigh your purse/pocket down!!

Canada has produced some wonderful comedians...John Candy, Rich Little, Dan Ackroyd, Martin Short, Rick Moranis, Mike Myers and the list goes on...and on. Also some excellent actors...Michael J. Fox, Richard Dean Anderson, Lorne Greene, and others. Singers, Paul Anka, Celine Dion, Shania Twain, Alanis Morisette, The Guess Who, and more. TV shows Kids in the Hall, You Can't Do That on Television. Newscaster Peter Jennings. And yes, I know some of these performers are dead.

Canadian's invented Trivial Pursuit!

When you shop at Candadian Tire, you get Canadian Tire Money with your change. Save enough and you can spend it back in the store. WhoooHOoo!! And yes there is a difference between Canadian Tire Money and Canadian Money.

You don't pay an electric or gas bill. You pay a "hydro" bill.

Tim Horton's makes great donuts!

Those of us who are/were blessed to live close enough to Canada to get the CBC broadcasts know how much better their Olympic coverage is. And Long Live HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA, including Ron Maclean (sp?)

They gave us Don Cherry.......love him or hate him, he's fun to watch, if for nothing else then at least to see what he's wearing this week!

Last, but definitely NOT least................................................

CANADA gave us the WORLD'S GREATEST SPORT ..............HOCKEY !!!!
And for that I am forever grateful!!![

Yep, our winters can be cold. Two winters ago, I was living in my home province of Newfoundland and Labrador. We broke our record snowfall that was set in the late 1800s! We had to hire back hoes to remove some snow because none of it was melting and we would have had to hire catapults to keep shovelling.

Just a note - I was living in a border town for a year and I went to a bar across the border in Minnesota. The differences I found of course were the money - I like our colourful currency - how do Americans tell their twenties from their ones in a dim bar?, their washrooms are bigger, their beer is weaker and their cigarettes are different!

Saw him on Canadian TV doing stand up when I was growing up. Maybe being north of the U.S. and knowing so much about the states, we're able to make fun of our big superpower to the south.

hmmm.....Tim Hortons ... established in Hamilton Ontario in 1964 by a former cop Ron Joyce and Tim Hortons. My dad did the plumbing on the first store on Ottawa Street. Now we seem to have one of these establishments on every second corner.....lots that are just drive throughs too. BTW cops get free coffee at Timmys.......you can more often than not see one driving in to get their freebie!
If you are inclined to hang out at a Hortons Coffee shop you will garner the name " Tim Bit Rider" and what is a Tim Bit???? It is the hole in the donut. What a marketing dream come true that was!!!!

Tim Horton was killed in a single car accident just down the highway from here years ago....can't recall the year now though!
And Joyce's daughter ended up marrying Horton's son.
Ron Joyce and Dave Thomas of Wendy's fame merged together a few years back.......and became quite the conglomerate(sp) lol

AND FYI Dave Thomas started out by being an owner of one of Colonel Saunders franchises!

AND Randy Bachman left the Guess Who because he became a Mormon and his new found religion did not condone the lifestyle of drugs, drinking etc. that was part of the daily routine of being a member of this band during this time.

American Woman was def anti-US, & it may well have been their biggest hit...but I would hardly call it their only real hit in the US...at least I know I was listening to them a LOT in the early 70s...saw BTO here just before their career took off in '72 or '73...heard recently from a local DJ that before the show Randy Bachman & Charlie Daniels got into a scuffle in the backstage trailer over who would go on first...now THERE was about a quarter ton of fun rocking the trailer, with skinny little DJ tryin' to break it up... ;)

Finally a joke that explains what it's like to be Canadian...

Once upon a time in the Kingdom of Heaven, God went missing for six days. Eventually, Michael the archangel found him, resting on the seventh day. He inquired of God, "Where have you been?" God sighed a deep sigh of satisfaction and proudly pointed downwards through the clouds, "Look Michael, look what I've made."

Archangel Michael looked puzzled and said, "What is it?" "It's a planet," replied God, "and I've put LIFE on it. I'm going to call it Earth and it's going to be a place of great balance." "Balance?" inquired Michael, still confused. God explained, pointing to different parts of Earth, "For example, Northern Europe will be a place of great opportunity and wealth while Southern Europe is going to be poor; the Middle East over there will be a hot spot. Over there I've placed a continent of white people and over there is a continent of black people," God continued, pointing to different countries. "This one will be extremely hot and arid while this one will be very cold and covered in ice."

The Archangel, impressed by Gods work, then pointed to a large landmass in the top corner and asked, "What's that one?" "Ah," said God. "That's Canada, the most glorious place on Earth. There are beautiful mountains, lakes, rivers, streams and an exquisite coastline. The people from Canada are going to be modest, intelligent and humorous and they're going to be found travelling the world. They'll be extremely sociable, hard working and high achieving, and they will be known throughout the world as diplomats and carriers of peace. I'm also going to give them super-human, undefeatable ice hockey players who will be admired and feared by all who come across them."

Michael gasped in wonder and admiration but then proclaimed; "What about balance, God? You said there will be BALANCE!" God replied wisely. "Wait until you see the loud-mouth bastards I'm putting next to them...."

No offence to my Southern Neighbours eh!

A few more things I've remembered:

The 401 highway running from Windsor to I'm not sure how far it goes...is one wicked highway!! Gotta be careful on that one...so many accidents and multi-vehicle ones at that!
And PLEASE the speed limit is in kilometers per hour NOT miles!!!
Don't try to drive at 100 mph!! It's 100 KPH roughly somewhere between 60-70 mph.

Two excellent comedy Television shows....Royal Canadian Air Farce and This Hour has 22 minutes!! Excellent shows...and gives us Yanks a peek into how we're perceived by our neighbors to the North. I know there must be more, but those are two that I'm most familiar with.

I love Red Rose brand tea and I can't find it here in Missouri!! Wahhhhh!!!!

Curling clubs are as common in the parts of Ontario that I've been in as bowling alleys are here in the States.

You don't wipe your mouth with a napkin, you use a serviette (sp?).

And I love the LaBatts commercials!! Especially the Bear.....

Is you cash-conversation any better, so you can calculate your bail?

Try 62.1371 Miles/hour,….. or ABOUT 5/8,….. or ROUGHLY ½ plus another 10%.
70 Miles/hour would be 112.654 Kilometers/hour and over the 10% leeway that even Sharni’s sweetest Mounty would allow.

So, what do Canadians have to be proud of?

1. Smarties

2. Crispy Crunch & Coffee Crisp

3. The size of our footballs fields and one less Down

4. Lacrosse is Canadian

5. Hockey is Canadian

6. Basketball is Canadian

7. Mr. Dress-up kicks Mr. Rogers butt

8. Tim Hortons kicks Dunkin' Donuts butt

9. Canada has the largest French population that never
surrendered to Germany.

10. We have the largest English population that never
ever surrendered or withdrew during any war to anyone, anywhere.

11. Our civil war was a bar fight that lasted a little
over an hour.

12. We knew plaid was cool way before Seattle caught on.

13. We still know what to do with all the parts of a
buffalo.

14. We invented ski-doos, jet-skis, velcro, zippers,
insulin, penicillin, zambonis, the telephone and short wave radios
that save countless lives each year.

15. We ALL have frozen our tongues to something metal and
lived to tell about it.

BUT MOST IMPORTANT!

16. ....the handles on our beer cases are big enough to
fit your hands with mitts on.

OOOOoohhhhh Canada!!

Oh yeah, and our elections only take one day.

Tulip bulbs are presented every year to Ottawa by the Royal Family of the Netherlands. Queen Beatrix was born in Ottawa during WW2. So she would not be born a Canadian citizen the wing of the hospital in which she was born was deemed diplomatically to be part of the Netherlands (ala peanut butter sandwiches I guess LOL) thus she was born a Dutch citizen!!! NOW!…….. I have a number of thoughts about the banning of Pitt Bulls. :madfire:

It is very much too bad the true source for the dog having been breed into a vicious menace can not be the focus of the banning. The repulsive people that have and still do support and participate in dog fighting should be incarcerated and themselves bred solely to produce dog food until the specie was bred back to an acceptable temperament. This being unlikely to happen, the temporary fix of banning the “mashers” will work until the dobbie type “slashers” are refined enough for the use. Sad to say this has happened before. :bang:

I just read all of this thread, and laughed so hard I almost pee'd my panties. Well metaphorcially, cause not wearing any. I live in BC and right now it is friggen cold. But we are also friggen hot in the summer. Now this is a new fact, (well I think it is a fact), both the driest place and the wettest place in Canada are in British Columbia,
Osoyoos, and Ocean Falls.

I love being Canadian, and I drink Sotch, Dramui and Chilean wines (except for the wines I make myself)..But I do drink Canadian Beer and English, Irish, Blegian, and occasionaly American...

But in the US they have something we don't have or is hard to find...Good Mexican Food!

Well it finally happened......

The bill to legalize same sex marriages passed. It goes to the senate and then into law. We have now joined ranks with the Netherlands and Belgium as the only three countries to recognize this type of union.

Also it has been decreed that a new Toyota plant near my city would boost the economy.....my god, fancy that!

OTTAWA — When it comes to spending bucks on booze, beer wins hands down in Canada.

Statistics Canada says that as usual, beer was by far the most popular beverage in terms of dollar value, capturing 50.7 per cent of sales compared with 24.7 per cent for spirits and 24.6 per cent for wine.

In a report on sales for the fiscal year ending March 31 last year, the agency says beer and liquor stores and agencies sold more than $16.1 billion worth of the beverages, up 4.9 per cent from the year before.

But that rate of growth was slower than the six per cent increase during the previous fiscal year.

And although Canadian products still dominated, imported beer gained ground, capturing 11 per cent of the market, up from three per cent a decade earlier.

The agency says when it came to wine, red was by far the preferred choice, capturing 49 per cent of the volume of sales, white 36 per cent and unidentified wine 15 per cent.

"Revenue from the sale of alcoholic beverages plus the net income realized by provincial and territorial liquor authorities hit $4.3 billion in 2003-04, up 7.2 per cent from the previous year ... the largest year-over-year increase in the last 20 years," Statistics Canada says.

Canadians bought 86.3 litres of beer, 13.3 litres of wine and 7.6 litres of spirits during the year, with total per capita purchases of alcoholic beverages amounting to $623.60, the agency said.

"Consumers in Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador led the pack, purchasing just over 115 litres of alcoholic beverages per capita. In contrast, those in Saskatchewan purchased only 94.4 litres, lowest of all."

By volume, per capita purchases of beer were highest in Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec, and lowest in British Columbia.

"Newfoundlanders also bought the highest per capita volumes in spirits. Quebecers led the way with purchases of wine.

"Among spirits, rum was still most popular in Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. Whisky was the preferred choice for consumers from Ontario to British Columbia."

THE LAW IS THE LAW

So if the CANADIAN government determines that it is against the law for the words "under God" to be on our money, then,
so be it.

And if that same government decides that the "Ten
Commandments" are not to be used in or on a government
installation, then, so be it.

And since they already have prohibited any prayer in the schools, on which they deem their authority, then so be it.

I say, "so be it," because I would like to be a law abiding Canadian citizen

I say, "so be it," because I would like to think that smarter people than I are in positions to make good decisions.

I would like to think that those people have the Canadian Public's best interests at heart.

BUT, YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE I'D LIKE?

Since we can't pray to God, can't Trust in God and cannot post His Commandments in Government buildings, I don't believe the Government and its employees should
participate in the Easter and Christmas.... celebrations which honor the God that our government is eliminating from many facets of Canadian life.

I'd like my mail delivered on Christmas, Good Friday, Thanksgiving & Easter. After all, it's just another day.

I'd like our Government to be in session on Christmas, Good Friday,Thanksgiving & Easter as well as Sundays. After all, it's just another day.

I'd like ALL Representatives to not have to worry about getting home for the "Christmas Break." After all ~~~ it's just another day.

I'm thinking that a lot of my taxpayer dollars could be saved, if all government offices & services would work on Christmas, Good Friday & Easter. It shouldn't cost any overtime since those would be just like any other day of the week to a government that is trying to be "politically correct."

In fact....

I think that our government should work on Sundays (initially set aside for worshipping God...) because, after all, our government says that it should be just another day....

What do you all think????

BRING BACK SANITY TO CANADA!!

Canadian court lifts ban on ‘swingers’ clubs

Group sex among consenting adults not a threat to society, it says

OTTAWA - Group sex among consenting adults is neither prostitution nor a threat to society, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled on Wednesday as it lifted a ban on so-called “swingers” clubs.

In a ruling that radically changes the way courts determine what poses a threat to the population, the top court threw out the conviction of a Montreal man who ran a club where members could have group sex in a private room behind locked doors.

“Consensual conduct behind code-locked doors can hardly be supposed to jeopardize a society as vigorous and tolerant as Canadian society,” said the opinion of the seven-to-two majority, written by Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin.

The decision does not affect laws against prostitution because no money changed hands among the adults having sex.

‘Bawdy house’ proprietor's appeal
The court was reviewing an appeal by Jean-Paul Labaye, who ran the L’Orage (Thunderstorm) club. He had been convicted in 1999 of running a “bawdy house” — defined as a place where prostitution or acts of public indecency took place.

Labaye — who is still running L’Orage despite his earlier conviction — said he was relieved, and would now go ahead with a new venture with backing from a group of Florida investors.

“We hope clients will be more calm. This will probably lead the way to a good future,” he told reporters, saying he was looking at adding a Jacuzzi and a swimming pool.

Labaye said he had about 2,000 regular clients who paid around $20 ($17 U.S.) a year for a membership card.

Lawyers for Labaye and the owner of another swingers’ club in Montreal argued that consensual sex among groups of adults behind closed doors was neither indecent or a risk to society.

The Supreme Court judges agreed.

“Criminal indecency or obscenity must rest on actual harm or a significant risk of harm to individuals or society. The Crown failed to establish this essential element of the offense. (Its) case must therefore fail,” McLachlin wrote.

In indecency cases, Canadian courts have traditionally probed whether the acts in question “breached the rules of conduct necessary for the proper functioning of society”. The Supreme Court ruled that from now on, judges should pay more attention to whether society would be actively harmed.

Deviant, maybe, but not dangerous
This seemed to ensure there could be no repeat of Labaye’s original conviction for causing “social harm” by allowing degrading and dehumanizing group sex to take place.

The judges said that just because most Canadians might disapprove of swingers’ clubs, this did not necessarily mean the establishments were socially dangerous.

“The causal link between images of sexuality and anti-social behavior cannot be assumed. Attitudes in themselves are not crimes, however deviant they may be or disgusting they may appear,” the judges said, noting that no one had been pressured to have sex or had paid for sex in the cases the court considered.

“The autonomy and liberty of members of the public was not affected by unwanted confrontation with the sexual activity in question ... only those already disposed to this sort of sexual activity were allowed to participate and watch,” they said.

They also dismissed the idea — raised during Labaye’s original trial — that group sex was dangerous because it could result in the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

“Sex that is not indecent can transmit disease while indecent sex might not,” they ruled.
