I read the most disturbing ever in my whole entire life last nite in Marie Claire magazine. In their Feb issue, they feature an article about men in certain regions of South Africa raping children as young as a 2 month old baby!!!

The article said that child rape over in South Africa is so common that no one even does anything about it anymore. The article also featured an interview w/this woman who left her 2 month old baby at home with the landlord to go to work and when she came back, she found her baby lying there, listless. She picked up her baby, thinking that it needed a diaper change and when she removed the diaper, she found a gaping hole where the baby's vagina was supposed to be. As it turned out, the landlord's neighbor raped her baby while she was at work. The landlord said that the baby bled so much that she went through 3 diapers. IS THIS SICK OR WHAT????!
I was floored when I read this article! I felt like my heart jumped out of my chest, not believing that someone could commit such a heinous crime and to make it worse, the it's considered "common" in South Africa!

What is everyone's opinion on this?

My opinion is a quick death is to good. Could go into detail...but will spear you. I'd would take limb by limb of with a dull butter knife and the cut his member off with that same knife, dip him in rubbing alcohol then tie him to a tree with fire ant mounds all around him. But he raises a very good point - nobody here has even questioned WHY they do it. Everyone just assumes the child rapists are perfectly sane people, who pay their taxes, go to church on Sundays and rape babies in their free time.

It's nowhere near that simple, people.

South Africa is having a huge problem with crime. Not just child rape, but theft, violence, drugs and all manner of things.

Most of the child rapes are GANG child rapes - young teenagers, street kids, who don't go to school much. They are not all bright, although I daresay many are quite intelligent. But they're living in a culture where it is, as Chinese Pussy said - a COMMON crime. Much as doing drugs are in Western societies. That doesn't make it right, of course.... but teenagers are foolish, and far too eager to be part of the group.

But there is no reasonable, logical, rational or justifiable excuse for this dispicable act.

What's the answer? I have absolutely no idea. The above suggestions - castration, dismemberment etc, are so inhuman as to be sinking to the level of the perpetrators. Sinking below it, even, because you are intelligent people capable of understanding the horror you are suggesting.

Of course, they should not be let free either. They need psychiatric and medical attention. And of coruse a lengthy jail sentence.

But that's not going to change the CULTURE of the society any more than it has changed the culture of drug-taking in Western teenagers.

The best I can suggest as a long term answer - education, healthcare, suitable jail terms and effective law enforcement.

But this isn't going to change overnight, unfortunately.

Well there you go - I've posted an opinion contra to that held by many people here, it seems..... so bring on the counter-arguments!

Before anyone feels too bad about their kneejerk reactions - Retribution plays an important part in justice. Not only does it reinforce a culture's intolerance of those acts which are totally unacceptable (like this one) but very often a punishment has to be reduced to the level of the perpertrator to make them suffer it and perhaps more importantly fear it.

If you lose the latter in your system, the bad guys just laugh at you and the good guys feel helpless.

These punishments don't have to be physical, I wouldn't live in a country that had the death penalty. But I am tempted in this case to say let a bull elephant fuck them up the ass.

Of course everyone's first reaction is to lash out and think of something horribly equally to the evil done, but I hope they then slow down and think it through. A guy must be sick to do such a thing, so you've got to get him off the street immediately to protect everyone else. Then think about punishment and rehabilitation, if that's possible.

Indulging in a bloody execution will do more damage to you and the rest of society than it will to the one sicko who needs to be locked up.

Ive watched and read this thread since it started, even made me think about what if it happened to one of my kids. I am not usually big on any type of violence, but in this instance. If some guy did this to my daughter, I would personally make the guys bail and he would not make it to his court date.

"it's considered "common" in South Africa!"I have not read the article, but speaking as a South African, I disagree somewhat with these assertions. For instance, I am aware of two incidents last year when baby rape was reported. The media went absolutely ballistic once the incidents were made public. It was all over the TV, radio, in magazines, you name it. It certainly is not something that was commonly known, and the massive outcry by a large part of the South African public affirms this.

I'm not sure what steps are being taken to alleviate this problem, but I seriously doubt that no steps are being taken!

Knockout, welcome to Pixies and thanks for sharing your first-hand knowledge. It did sound strange that any significant numbers of people in ANY country could consider baby-rape as "common." The act is so dispicable. I agree with Uncle Silky that if those involved are judged sick ... they should be put away and treated where they can't hurt anyone ever again ... but if they're not sick ... it's hard to even imagine a punishment suitable.

Makes me think of a bumper sticker I once saw, "The only reason some people are alive is because it's illegal to kill them." (Hmmm, that doesn't sound nice ... sorry.)
