Transitions: Jim McKay
Jim McKay, who was best known as host of ABC's Wide World of Sports died at the age of 86.
McKay also hosted ABC's coverage of the 1972 Olympics, and told those watching that event of the hostage situation, that ultimatly ended with the athletes being killed. When it became known that the athletes died, despite the raid of a commando team, McKay was stunned as was everyone else, and simply announced "They're all gone". McKay died of natural causes at his Maryland farm, according to his son. |
I remember watching the '72 Olympics coverage on Armed Forces TV while overseas in Japan. We were put on alert during the crisis.
