What is the absolute greatest love song of all time? I have lots of favorites but want to know what all of you think. I know we have discussed *F* Me music but I am looking for love songs. I guess for some those will be the same. Tell me who sings it if you know too. I, for example love, Al Green's Let's Stay Together but I am not sure if it is the greatest. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~>Lilith

I'm dating myself here, with my choice of group's and the song is more recent, but my favorite is the one that my wife and I call "our" song.

When You Love a Woman by Journey.

They were much more popular in the mid-late 80's than when they did this song back in 1997, but its words happen to fit our situation almost perfectly.

Also along this line is romantic music by Jim Brickman..most of his is instrumental, but it sets the mood very well.

Favourite love songs... Can't possibly pick just one.

I wasn't even born when most of these were recorded. Still love 'em, though.

My all-time fave has to be John Denver's 'Annie's Song' (1974) --- just like in my own poems, I'm all about sensuality and sensory imagery. This fits the bill perfectly --- and I quote:

"You fill up my senses / Like a night in a forest / Like the mountains in springtime / Like a walk in the rain // Like a storm in the desert / Like a sleepy blue ocean / You fill up my senses / Come fill me again // Come let me love you / Let me give my life to you / Let me drown in your laughter / Let me die in your arms / Let me lay down beside you / Let me always be with you / Come let me love you / Come love me again // You fill up my senses / Like a night in a forest / Like the mountains in springtime / Like a walk in the rain // Like a storm in the desert / Like a sleepy blue ocean / You fill up my senses / Come fill me again"

Man. If only I could write like that. That song always transports me.........

Or what about Simon and Garfunkel's 'Kathy's Song', (1966) --- (I'll only quote part of it here):

"... And so you see I have come to doubt / all that I once held as true. / I stand alone without beliefs. / The only truth I know is you. // And as I watch the drops of rain / weave their weary paths and die / I know that I am like the rain. / There but for the grace of you go I."

*swooning* :o Ahhhh........ Beautiful.

More sweet ones include Donovan's 'Catch the Wind'; Gordon Lightfoot's 'Song for a Winter's Night'; Stan Roger's '45 Years'; Van Morrison's 'Crazy Love'; and Leonard Cohen's 'Suzanne'.

I'm in a folksy mood tonight, apparently. Maybe tomorrow night I'll be thinking jazz (Ella, Louis, Frank, Billie, Duke... all good choices) or blues (oh, I just have to mention Eric Clapton's 'Tears in Heaven') or goodness knows what else. Medieval madrigals perhaps, or Zulu chants? I have weird taste... :D

(For something that dates from within my actual lifespan, I'd have to say 'Dark Angel' by Sarah McLachlan and Blue Rodeo or maybe Dave Matthews Band's 'The Space Between'.)

My wifes was always "Slow Hands"for obvious reasons. She said
that it reminded her of when I used to masturbate her and drive
her crazy;by going slowly;when we were dating!
I'm dating myself but I and; a female coworker; used to like"Hot
Stuff" by Donna Summer(sp?)when I worked at Sikorsky in Conn.

P.S.Yes;I did have my sexual daliances when younger;to prove
that I "still had it."I would kill if the shoe was on the other foot.

It's not a song, but the sexiest music is Rachmaninoff(sp?)

Variation 18 of Variations on a theme by Paganini.

They used it as the love theme in "Somewhere in Time".

hm...so many..
this sounds cliched but the one that really springs to mind is *stand inside your love* - smashing pumpkins

it's a really powerful song and it wrestles with the idea of love very well for a 4 or so minute rock song. I think you have to hear it really.

OF~ I agree tht Rach rocks!

nutworld~dating myself as well, I do not think that there is much by Journey that I do not love.

Irish~I too have a strange sexy disco thing!

SFC~ like all of your choices but I always find it weird when songs have a specific name, Annie's Song, Mandy, Kathy's Song. Harder fo me to personalize. Eric Clapton's Tears In Heaven is wonderful

admired their personalities.Besides-the lead singer had long hair!
That was cool when I was younger!I think it was just the memories that were brought back by the Donna Summer song.

I don't know about 'Greatest' but "Thank You" by Led Zepplin is a fave of mine...

If the sun refused to shine,
I would still be loving you.
When mountains crumble to the sea,
There will still be you and me.

Of course the musical tracks laid down behind the lyrics really add to to the whole mood of the song...

Oh yeah, and "That's Amore" by Dean Martin...

(Yes, I'm really only 30...) ;)

Lilith --- Don't worry, you're not the only weird one! If you asked me my favourite female singer, I'd probably have to say Ella Fitzgerald --- which is the same answer my grandmother (age 83) would give. And I'm only 21!!!!

And OldFart --- Rachmaninoff and Paganini are fabulous, I'd have to agree. But my favourite classical pieces would have to be baroque, which came even earlier! Bach's Goldberg Variations (I only have 13 recordings of that... Only mildly obsessive here! :o) or his Cello Suites (played by YoYo Ma) are definitely my top picks... The Cello Suites are especially good, because the depth of sound just runs through your whole body and the vibrato mirrors the quivering excitement perfectly. They're a little dark for some tastes, but they suit me just fine!

Do you mean Trisha Yearwood or Leann Rimes? Faith Hill never recorded "How Do I Live".

Some of my favorite lovesongs, starting with mine and my hubby's song are:

Me and You ~ Kenny Chesney :D
Truly, Madly, Deeply ~ Savage Garden
My Best Friend ~ Tim McGraw
Just To Hear You Say That You Love Me ~ Faith Hill and Tim McGraw
Keeper of The Stars ~ Tracy Byrd

Or how about "Unforgettable" by Nat King Cole?

Another meaningful one to me and my hubby is "Right Here Waiting" by Richard Marx.

re: the Rightous Bros., I checked out the bio, good stuff there, even tho it's more of a promo... but I had read that Bill & Bobby have been on & off again many times over the years, ego battles, who got more solos, etc., kinda like they were real brothers; I guess they finally worked out their differences, soon as they realized how more $ they could make as a team lol. Legend has it that when they recorded "Lovin' feeling", Hatfield asked producer Phil Spector, "So what am I supposed to do on this song?", Phil replied, "You can go directly to the bank!"

You beat me to it Red. I would have said just about anything by Marvin Gaye or Al Green. Gotta throw Sam Cooke in there too.

"At first I thought it was infatuation, but ooh it's lasted so long
Now I find myself wanting to marry you and take you home
Woah-oh-wo-oh-oh
Yoooou send me
Darling yooou send me
Darling yooou send me
Honest you do, honest you, honest you do"

Two songs in particular that I must mention is not by Marvin, Al or Sam. One, "Your Song" by Elton John and Bernie Taupin.

My wife and I fell in love to that song. We danced to it at our wedding.

The second is an atypical love song. "Arms Wide Open" by Creed. You don't often hear a song devouted to a father's love for his child. I get teary whenever I hear it because I hit the airwaves at the same time I found out I'd be a father.

"Well I just heard, the news today
It seems my life, is gonna change
I close my eyes, begin to pray
Then tears of joy stream down my face
With arms wide open, under the sunlight
Welcome to this place, I'll show you everything
With arms wide open"

See what I mean?

Just a bibliography note on Something (in the way she moves) by James Taylor:

It was orignally on the Beatles Abbey Road album and was one of the few songs the band recorded written by George Harrison.

Ironically, Frank Sinatra said it was his favorite Lennon-McCartney song.

It was written for Patty Boyd, Harrison's wife at the time. Patty Boyd eventually began an affair with Eric Clapton who went on to write "You Look Wonderful Tonight" and "Layla" for her.

At one point in time, Clapton and Harrison toured together calling themselves "Husbands-in-law."

College Bowl is like Jeopardy, only in teams. It's the bowl for the smart/trivia oreinted students that doesn't require any athletic ability, only knowledge. Many colleges compete against other Universities in their conference (much like athletics), but there are also national competitions.

Many of the questions and categories are based on trivial knowledge (trivial as in not "unimportant" but rather "little known facts")

That would be Eric Clapton, not quite one of the Beatles, tho he did sit in on some George Harrison songs... he was with several groups in the 60's, Yardbirds, Bluesbreakers, Cream, a lot of solo work since. BTW, "Tears" was written for his 5-yr-old son Conner, who died after falling out a window... could make it one of the greatest Love songs of all time, imo...

It is. (If we're both thinking of the same song):

Woman I can hardly express My mixed emotions at my thoughtlessness After all I'm forever in your debt And woman I will try to express My inner feelings and thankfulness For showing me the meaning of success ooh well

Woman I know you understand The little child inside the man Please remember my life is in your hands And woman hold me close to your heart However distant don't keep us apart After all it is written in the stars ooh well

Woman please let me explain I never meant to cause you sorrow or pain So let me tell you again and again (I love you now and forever)

So true, Yoko made herself so unlovable to everyone else; yet she seemed to inspire John, & I say what else matters? I guess because I've seen the same reaction to my wife, she can be abrasive, & I have lost friends over her - but after 27 years, I'm too tired to break in a new model LOL :p
While we're on the subject of Lennon's last album, there is what Paul called the most beautiful song he ever heard, "Beautiful Boy"; one line in that song lays me over every time...

"Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans"

Hey, that'd make a great quote, wouldn't it?

a collectors item. The old "Stones"album with the zipper on the

I think the song you are looking for is "Cats in the Craddle" By Harry Chapin.

"Cat's in the craddle and the silver spoon, little boy blue and the man in the moon, when you comin home dad, I don't know when....but we'll get together then, son. We're gonna have a good time then...."

I don't think Croce actually sang it...but the two are easily confused.

I built two speaker boxes to go with it;on the other side of the
room.They are in my garage.I also have an old 8-track;for a car;

You might want to double check on that......just off the top of my head right now on the Meet the Beatles LP(their first American LP) George sang AND wrote "Don't Bother Me". On A Hard Days Night George sang AND wrote "I Should Have Known Better". I can't check the rest of the LP's right now as they are in my bedroom and my husband is asleep.

Ok, I have all the Beatles LPs I have, which is all of them. Anyway, George didn't write anything on "The Beatles Second Album", nor did he write anything on "Something New", and I stand corrected....he didn't write anything from the soundtrack for "A Hard Day's Night" or "Beatles '65". "The Early Beatles" was pretty much a duplicate on Capitol of the "Introducing the Beatles" LP that was released on VeeJay and he had nothing on there either that he wrote. On "Beatles VI" he wrote and sang "You Like Me Too Much". On "Rubber Soul" he wrote and sang "This Bird Has Flown". On "HELP" he wrote and sang "I Need You". On "Yesterday and Today" it was "If I Needed Someone". Then on "Revolver" (one of my personal favorite Beatle LPs) he did "Taxman". And on "Magical Mystery Tour" it was "Blue Jay Way". On "Sgt. Pepper" it was "Within You Without You". On what is known as "The White Album" he did "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Long Long Long", "Piggies" and "Savoy Truffle". On "Yellow Submarine" he did "Only a Northern Song" and "It's all Too Much". On "Abbey Road" he did "Something" (which started this whole mess! LOL!!) and "Here Comes the Sun". Then finally on "Let it Be" he contributed "I Me Mine" and "For You Blue".
Yeah, I know I must seem like a picky bitch.....sorry.
There's a really GREAT Beatles website with both their US and UK discography at http://www.thebeatlesongs.com/index.html. ;)

scotzoidman
03-28-2002, 01:10 AM
Sugar, glad we cleared that up... I confess I was working from memory, and basing my statement on their UK releases... "Meet the Beatles" (1st US) was based on the 2nd UK LP, with the one GH song included, and it would be nearly 2 yrs before he got another song in (Help!). We Beatles fanatics are entitled to be picky! I don't mean to disparage George's early writing, it just takes a while to learn the craft, and John/Paul got a big head start... his work on "Abbey Road" proved he could stand up with the best that LenMac could produce... and I think we've successfully hijacked this thread LOL

Also, "Blink" by the Young Dubliners gets an honorable mention, although it's more about a missed opportunity for love:

"Some people say I'm obsessive
To know so much in just seconds
But if love at first sight is a real thing
It just gave me a beating"

Finally, Cheap Trick would have one of the best love songs of all time if not for one word:

"All I want is a place in your heart
To fall into
All I need is someone to love
And tonight it's you"

If not for that one word, "Tonight It's You" would rank pretty high on my list.

(Quotes for all songs named in my previous post are available on request. Seriously--if you wanna know why something's on my list, just ask.)
