A some other countries already know....us Aussies have a language all our own ;) We seem to have this habit of adapting words from other languages to make our own.....and our as for our sayings...well there we really seem to lose some ppl...:D

So i thought i'd start up this thread so that if anyone hears an Oz saying or word....they can come here and have an Aussie try to explain it....and i do mean try...some of the words even we dont understand...*LOL*

My favorite word is "Feral" and i use it all the time...eg: Those kids are feral!....jeez we had a feral weekend..

Favorite saying...hmmmm..."I'm drier than a dead dingos donger"

Thank you dear. I’m just a poor, dumb Westside Irish kid. I need all the help I can get!:(

Love the “dead dingo’s donger”.

Still not sure about the “feral”? Should I see that as positive or negative? Both kids and weekends can be either.

Clarify for me please. We use “flash lights”, SOME people use “torches”. Do you have “lanterns”?:) :)

After getting up of the floor I've decided that I cannot let an opportunity go by.....

The correct response to your query Panty would have to be:

We Aussies do not have any of those, because being Down Under........the sun shines out of our asses...LOL..:D :D :D

I got so confused when I first moved to Adelaide by the following:

"flat out"
"Rocked up"
"goodonya" (for those of us in North America - good on you)

Slang that stuck:

"Sweet as!"
"heaps" (as in "heaps good friends")
"reckon"

Fun thread!!! Cheers big ears!

PS - I'm curious how the Aussies feel about Steve Erwin...a.k.a The Crockadile Hunter?

Here's the Aussie version of Jingle Bells!

Dashing through the bush, in a rusty Holden Ute,
Kicking up the dust, esky in the boot,
Kelpie by my side, singing Christmas songs,
It's Summer time and I am in my singlet, shorts and thongs

Oh! Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way,
Christmas in Australia on a scorching summers day, HeyJingle bells, jingle bells, Christmas time is beaut !,
Oh what fun it is to ride in a rusty Holden Ute.

Engine's getting hot; we dodge the kangaroos,
The swaggie climbs aboard, he is welcome too.
All the family's there, sitting by the pool,
Christmas Day the Aussie way, by the barbecue.

Oh! Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way,
Christmas in Australia on a scorching summers day, Hey!
Jingle bells, jingle bells, Christmas time is beaut!,
Oh what fun it is to ride in a rusty Holden Ute.

Come the afternoon, Grandpa has a doze,
The kids and Uncle Bruce, are swimming in their clothes.
The time comes 'round to go, we take the family snap,
Pack the car and all shoot through, before the washing up.

Oh! Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way,
Christmas in Australia on a scorching summers day, Hey!
Jingle bells, jingle bells, Christmas time is beaut!,
Oh what fun it is to ride in a rusty Holden ute

[email protected] was cute

Someone was asking about 6 white boomers

Six White Boomers
(Rolf Harris 1961)

Early on one Christmas Day a Joey kangaroo,
Was far from home and lost in a great big zoo.
'Mummy, where's my mummy? They've taken her away.'
We'll help you find your mummy, son. Hop up on the sleigh.'

Up beside the bag of toys little Joey hopped,
But they hadn't gone far when Santa stopped.
Unharnessed all the reindeer and Joey wondered why,
Then he heard a far off booming in the sky.

Six white boomers, snow white boomers,
Racing Santa Claus through the blazing sun.
Six white boomers, snow white boomers
On his Australian run.

Pretty soon old Santa began to feel the heat,
Took his fur lined boots off to cool his feet,
Into one popped Joey, feeling quite okay,
While those old man Kangaroos kept pulling on the sleigh.

Six white boomers, snow white boomers,
Racing Santa Claus through the blazing sun.
Six white boomers, snow white boomers,
On his Australian run.

Joey said to Santa, 'Santa, what about the toys?
Aren't you giving some to these girls and boys?'
'They've got all their presents, son, we were here last night,
this trip is an extra trip, Joey's special flight.'

Six white boomers, snow white boomers,
Racing Santa Claus through the blazing sun.
Six white boomers, snow white boomers,
On his Australian run.

Soon the sleigh was flashing past right over Marble Bar,
'Slow down there,' cried Santa, 'it can't be far,
Come up on my lap here, son, and have a look around.'
'There she is, that's Mummy, bounding up and down.'

Six white boomers, snow white boomers,
Racing Santa Claus through the blazing sun
Six white boomers, snow white boomers,
On his Australian run.

Well that's the bestest Christmas treat that Joey ever had,
Curled up in mother's pouch feeling snug and glad.
The last they saw was Santa heading northwards from the sun,
The only year the boomers worked a double run.

Six white boomers, snow white boomers,
Racing Santa Claus through the blazing sun.
Six white boomers, snow white boomers,
On his Australian run.

Well TDK....When a film run is being made with a vid recorder it is normal to make sure that all the props are in the same place when a scene is being faked.. E.G. position of boat relative to trees...position of his woman relative to boat... position of lantern relative to him, boat, woman etc. as they splice the tape together you will notice jumps in scenes , and a lot of props out of place.
A mate of mine on the Sunshine Coast Q'land has attended some of the film shoots and can confirm what most Q'landers know.

this thread chuck a U-ie I missed?

No, just didn't read back far enough.

Advantage of living in an isolated backwater where our

Well, I respectfully disgaree with Steve Irwin's q-land mates. I happen to think that the Croc Hunter is absolutely fabulous. I love his gig! I'm just waiting for 'ol Agro to get a piece of him one of these days!

OK, so I reek of being an American...oh well! ;)

This leads me to my fav Aussie word...courtesy of that great Q-lander Steve Irwin...CRIKEY!

Second would be TUCKER...hey, a man's got to eat.

Third would be FOSTER's...a definite Aussie contribution to partying!

Steve Irwin makes me cringe but he is a shrewd operator cos the lingo is layed on so thick to impress you gullable yanks , haha.

CRIKEY is hasn't been heard in public in oz since 1968 and FOSTERS is piss weak swill that no self respecting aussie would touch. It's marketed at the tourists for the tourists cos they don't know any better. If you want the taste of real aussie beer , go find yourself a VB (Victoria Bitter) ...... now THAT'S beer. what a beaut resurected thread :)

Steve Irwin does lay it on thick and he is regarded by a great percentage of the Australian population as a wanker, still he is getting wealthy at it.

A piece of slang that is fairly uniquely used in tasmania rather than the rest of the country is rummun or originally "rum one" meaning a quirky character.

i laughed at a previous post here where someone was rooting for the crocodiles. Rooting is slang for fucking in Aus so that would be a very interesting spectacle :)

LMAO @ SuccubusKitty & Catch22:C

Only this year have I become familiar with one Aussie phrase that I’ll long remember. Has to do with Christmas trees and decorations.;) LMAO (right BilBo?)

Grumbleguts- Your “rummun” is a new one for me, but the best are the ones we have a total different meaning for. “Rooting” also has a hunting or looking for something meaning for us Yanks. I like yours better.;)

Loved SuccubusKitty good night sentence although “fart sack” is the same for us.:)

Sharni- ”Bitser” is totally new to me but “bawdy” means lewd or rude up-over. “Blimey” isn’t new but I believe most Americans associate it with the Britts.

Now we have to recall some of the words we have laughed about in our IM’s and get them on here.:)

Lets see if I can add to the list

I feel crook = I feel unwell

pissed to the eyballs - drunk as buggery

I am pissed off - watch out I am very annoyed

you have Buckley's - you have no chance (an expression from the early colonial days when a convict named william Buckley got lost and lived with the aborigines for 18 years)

beyond the black stump/ way out in the woop woop - a long way from anywhere

bangs like a dunny door in a gale - a woman with wanton ways

Friday arvo - Friday afternoon

techicolour yawn - vomit

will think of few more later
